Failing sensor?

Dear all,

This is my first post after a lot of reading and learning about the Leica M8.

I tested it like members and other fora taught me but now after a few weeks I have gotten a few images with this horizontal stripe.

Did I just buy a failing M8?

Any advice would be really helpful.

No -this is standard M8 behaviour when you have a bright highlight precisely on the edge of the frame. You'll soon learn to avoid the  situation. See the M camera FAQ at the top of the forum.

Thank you Jaap for the quick reply. Only I cannot find the FAQ about this issue. I noticed smaller more insignificant lines with the same type of 'firework' (sterretjes in Dutch as you already now) lighting. Could you refer me to the correct discussion or FAQ?

Thank you.

I've had thick white lines from the edge into the image, when a bright point source is just off-frame...very occasionally. Don't recall ever having a dark line in the "middle" of the image though. I'm not disagreeing with Jaap...just my experience with two M8's.

Naampje..sometimes digital images do unexplained "things". If it continues periodically perhaps try a full charged battery, and a new memory card.

All best and welcome to the Forum.

Thanks all for the help and the welcome!

I'm really happy to have bought this M8, to me as a amateur it really is such an amazing tool to have after all the lesser camera's I have had.

I have bought a Summarit-M 35mm 2.5 and a Summicron-M 40mm 2.0 together with a CL, now I use mainly the Summicron.

These pictures are crops from the edge and the error comes like Jaap said from the edge of the frame.

Here is another example.

It flares from the edge horizontally into the frame and has a straight vertical cut off at a the end.

It really happened only in about 2 shots from about 600 shots taken.

Same situation. What happens is that light from the highlight on the edge of the sensor gets under the light baffle that covers the reference pixels on the outside of the sensor. This messes up the readout, resulting in a green/black line over the half of the sensor that is affected.

The width of the line corresponds to the size of the highlight. M8 sensors are particularly sensitive to this effect although it has been reported once or twice on the M9 sensor as well. There is some sample variation, but all M8-s can be provoked into this behaviour.

As I said, absolutely nothing to worry about, there is nothing wrong with your camera. Leica is aware of the quirk and has let know that there is no remedy.

I see, your second pic shows it right to the edge. I'm working on a tablet and thought the first image just showed a bar in the middle of the picture...but evidently right through to the edge.

The slightest shift in perspective will stop the problem. .

All best..

I have made well over 10.000 pics with several M8*s and I have never seen this on a single picture!

Strange, but I believe of course Jaap's explanation.

It all happened with the same lens the Summicron-C 40mm which is prone to flare (they say).

Could that add to the equation? Flaring?

And John, it only happened during Christmas and new years, just avoid shooting this time of year or near Christmas trees and fireworks ;)

Jaap, thanks again for your contribution, I have read many of your answer here on these fora, you know your stuff! With all the people running around screaming about the inevitable failure of anything M8/9 it's nice to read some reassurement :)

Reads like a nice FAQ post!
