Leica X-U camera strap

Hi Kyros

I use two straps for different purposes and a mechanism to make it easy to swap between the two. This works very well.

Both are Leica straps. One is the general black strap that came in the box with the camera. In addition, I purchased the orange Leica Floating Carrying Strap, Order number / Product code 18840:

http://www.leicaboutique-pra.com.au/collections/leica-x-accessories/products/floating-carrying-strap?variant=1232974756

This floating strap has been brilliant. First, the camera alone will sink, but with this strap it really does float. Second, it is very bright and stands out, so I imagine that I could find it against blue water or white beach sand if it did get thrown off my neck by a wave.

I found that it's so bright and big that I didn't want to use the floating strap in other situations, such as when just walking around with friends. I got tired of rethreading when changing straps, so I made my own clips from marine grade rope and swages. However, this was an ugly solution, so I recently purchased two sets of Peak Design's Anchor Links from a local photographic store:

http://www.cameraelectronic.com.au/peak-design-anchor-links

I can change straps quickly, and being able to remove the floating strap once I've returned home from the beach means that I can wash the camera easily, quickly dry the water off with a towel and get the memory card without worrying that water from the strap would drip into the camera. I do double-check that the strap clips are securely locked in place before using the camera.

Now I just spend more time out and about with the camera and getting exercise while enjoying photography. It is improving my fitness and wellbeing.

Thank you Shane

Looks very functional. Does it wear off easily?

It is very functional.

I'm not sure what is meant by "wear off easily".

If you mean "come off easily" in water, it doesn't. Sometimes a wave will knock it off, but what I can do is place the strap across my chest, so that it's not just around my neck; one arm is through the loop of the strap. It's also easy to swim with it over a shoulder and across my body. The strap with anchor links is easily long enough.

What were you wanting to know?

Thank you. Just asking if the friction between metal and cord will cause the cord to break...

Ah, thanks.

Good question; I'm not sure.

My two thoughts on this are:

First, I think the only thing to do is check the cord for fraying. So far, so good.

Second, any impact that is likely to cause a broken cord will do more damage to the camera than would be acceptable, so a broken cord would be of less concern.

It's true that the camera is build to be rugged and is tough against knocks and being dropped. It has bumped against rocks when climbing out of water. I don't bang it heavily and I keep the lens away from rocks. The manual helps set the limits:

"The camera is to some extent impact-resistant...Excessive pressure, dropping or other impacts may negatively impair the camera's water and dust resistance.

Leica X-U Instructions

Leica_X-U_DE-EN.pdf

page 94

I've taken this to mean that I shouldn't force water around it, such as with a hose or waterfall, and don't bang it around a lot. If there was a force that would break the cord, I think that force would be more of a risk to its resistance to water and dust.

Thank you Shane for being so thorough...

It comes first on my shopping list in the absence of another opinion....

XU is a great camera and so enjoyable to use

Hi Shane

That was really a good piece of advice. I did not know the existence of these items, which were easily found on the eBay. That you for helping me too.

Best wishes

Klaus

Here's a small combo.

The handstrap is from BLNCinema (via amazon).

It's a little bit difficult to install.

But then it's very handy to use.
