azarur Posted December 20, 2016 Share #1 Posted December 20, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, This is my first post on this forum. I have been shooting a Leica M9 since 2010. Last weekend - after much reading, pondering and thinking - I bought an M Typ 262. The question now is: should I sell my M9? The M9 has some sentimental value. I bought it used and it was the first Leica I owned. I love that camera. I've shot some Of the best pictures of my life and the camera has brought me much joy over the years. Also I won't get too much money for it (about $2 k it seems). On the flip side I don't think I'll ever use the M9 again. It would become a display piece. If I sold it, it would give a new person a chance to experience the joy that the M9 brings. I know this is hugely subjective, but I would love to hear people's opinions. Thanks. wda Posted December 20, 2016 Share #2 Posted December 20, 2016 I regret selling my M9, but at the time its future health was a big question. I need not have worried. While it is a shame to keep a camera unused, there might be occasions when you could use both bodies fitted with different lenses. The M9 will always be a desirable camera and should not lose too much money in the near term. So why not hang on to it, use it, enjoy it, and review the situation in six months time? Welcome to the forum, azarur.
Jeff S Posted December 20, 2016 Share #3 Posted December 20, 2016 (edited) If you can afford it, there are potential benefits to a back-up body. I kept one of my M8.2s (one was a back-up) when I bought an M240. It goes on long distance travel, just in case (damage, failure, theft or whatever). Robert M Poole Posted December 20, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 20, 2016 I only keep something if I think it can do something another camera can't. So, I kept my Fuji x100 when I bought my m9 because it can close focus, built in flash, video etc and I kept my Fuji xe1 because I can use legacy lenses on it. There is some sentimental value to be sure, the x100 was what renewed my love of photography,I probably should sell the x100 and just keep the xe1 so who am I to give advice
azarur Posted December 20, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted December 20, 2016 Thanks for these comments. I get the "two body" suggestion. It's a good one. I think I'll keep it (hidden, as I promised my wife i would sell it when I bought the new one!) Sent from my LG-H810 using Tapatalk

earleygallery Posted December 20, 2016 Share #7 Posted December 20, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's a digital camera. Its already rather dated and the value will only go down. Should it develop a fault - which electrical goods can do without warning - it will be near worthless. Unless you need or particularly want a 2nd body I would sell it now - if you can hide the M9 from your wife you could also hide a new lens instead Or even better turn the M9 into a fantastic holiday somewhere new and put the M to good use. Peter H Posted December 20, 2016 Share #10 Posted December 20, 2016 The camera or the promise? Jeff After writing it I realised it was ambiguous. I decided to leave it to the OP's conscience!

dpitt Posted December 21, 2016 Share #14 Posted December 21, 2016 Unfortunately you made a promise to sell it... Otherwise I would suggest you give it to me I often take two bodies, M8 and M9 each with a different lens mounted because I hate changing lenses in the field. It is so easy to catch some dust on the sensor when changing a lens in the open. Also, this is the closest you get to replace a zoom on a RF. I would use two M9's or better still, a 262 and a M9 if I had the budget.
