M2 CLA in the UK. Any recommendations?

Hi All.

I have bought my first Leica M series, a rather battered M2. It has a few issues.

The slower speeds don't seem quite right, the shutter button doesn't pop back up and the wind lever only springs back about 3/4 of the way. I don't think it will be difficult to sort.

On a positive note, the self-timer works and the rangefinder is clean and clear and the focusing part of the rangefinder also seems fine,

So I am looking for someone in the UK who can fix these issues. I am in the Newcastle Upon Tyne area, if there is anyone local, that would be even better.

Also, is there anyone I should avoid? I have heard of people having to wait months to get their camera back and costs escalating.

Lastly, does anyone care to share what the costs are likely to be? I have had my Rolleis serviced by an ex Rollei employee and he charges around £70 for a CLA, but I am guessing the cost of a Leica CLA will be more.

Thanks for any replies.

Regard

Carl

Hi,

There is a list on the Leica blog http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-news/leica-repair-specialists/

In addition Aperture in London have an in house repairer. There are others too - most dealers will know a repair tech.

I would advise NOT sending it to Leica, their prices are very high and I've heard that they often sub out work on older cameras to independents anyway.

Malcolm Taylor is legendary but also has a bit of a reputation for long turnaround times, so if you do use him I'd suggest getting an agreed timescale in advance.

The film advance lever shouldn't 'spring back' all the way, it rests proud of the camera until you push it home. Not sure what you mean about the shutter button but it definately sounds like your camera needs attention.

As for costs CRR have a price list on their site, but it will of course depend on what parts/attention your particular camera needs. FWIW Leica quoted me a minimum of £450 for a CLA on my M2 and that was a number of years ago. A local tech did it for about a quarter of that.

Having had work done by Malcolm Taylor, including fixing a Tri Elmar, I can't recommend him highly enough. True gentleman and yes, there have been people who have alleged problems, but with me, great work.

Sprockets camera repairs. Costs around £100. He's serviced multiple lenses and bodies for me and I have always been v happy with the service, turnaround is quick too.

Red Dot cameras have a good reputation, they CLA'd my M3 a little while back for £144. Turnaround was three weeks. I would use again.

Thanks for all the replies.

Looks like there are plenty to choose from! I will contact someone in the new year now.

Sadly , Peter at CRR has just posted that his wife died suddenly last week and he is not doing any repairs until further notice.

Regards

Carl

Oh, that is a complete shock and such a shame.  I called in to see Peter and Ann just a few weeks ago.  I knew she was unwell, but didn't expect this.

RDC no longer offer a facility to service customer’s equipment (which was done via Sprockets).

I'd also say Cameraworks,

This year Alan & James gave my 1955 DS M3 a CLA plus rebuilt part of the rangefinder and re-skinned it, all in all a great job,  its like a new camera now excepting for a few dings that tell of its history and that i like to keep.

My only connection is as a very happy customer
