Carlton Hill Cemetery Edinburgh. Appropriately sited next to a memorial to the great figure of the Edinburgh Enlightenment, David Hume


Lovely picture and a very noble sentiment. 


Ironically, Scottish-American soldiers are more often associated with the South, rather than Lincoln's North. And of course, Scotland and England despite themselves having abolished their slave trade decades earlier, for reasons of the cotton trade sided with the South, sending military aid. Scotland's favorite son, Thomas Carlyle, even published a treatise proclaiming the virtues of "Negro" slavery.


I suspect David Hume was rolling over in his grave....
