Advertisement Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Hi SirPiet, Take a look here New TL Camera (almost) confirmed by Leica - get your purses ready ;-). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LocalHero1953 Posted September 27, 2016 Share #2 Posted September 27, 2016 TL has been used by Leica to refer to T camera equipment since the SL came out. The mount is the L mount, but T lenses are referred to as TL mount etc. I think you're reading too much into this. OTOH, I have no doubt a new T will be produced, and it wouldn't surprise me if they referred to it explicitly as the TL.
SirPiet Posted September 27, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted September 27, 2016 TL has been used by Leica to refer to T camera equipment since the SL came out. That's actually not correct, even the Leica website still refers to the "Leica T" and "Lenses for Leica T", so the only products with the TL name are the two new lenses. Why would they name the App like the mount though?

Why would they name the App like the mount though? I can't find a Leica page from last year, but this post implies the TL term was in use last October: http://www.reddotforum.com/content/2015/10/new-tl-lenses-coming-soon/ I'm not arguing there will be no new T2/TL - I just don't see this as evidence for it
mjh Posted September 27, 2016 Share #5 Posted September 27, 2016 Ever since the introduction of the SL Leica has used the TL moniker to distinguish the T(L) system from the SL system, but also stress the fact that both share the same L mount (originally christened T mount). Now on the one hand it would make sense to extend this usage so ‘TL’ would also refer to the camera itself. On the other hand, Leica generally prefers one-letter camera names, so it remains to be seen whether the next T will actually be a TL.
LocalHero1953 Posted September 27, 2016 Share #6 Posted September 27, 2016 So why did they call the SL as it is? It must be an S with an L mount? I can just imagine the blame game in the marketing department at Wetzlar: "So which ****head round here thought SL was the least confusing name for our new camera?" mjh Posted September 27, 2016 Share #7 Posted September 27, 2016 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) So why did they call the SL as it is? It must be an S with an L mount? The SL bears a lot of similarity to the S, handling-wise. An ‘S Lite’ so to speak. The Mercedes SL Roadster may have been an inspiration, too. It is the name of the T that is somewhat problematic. The T system had to renamed ‘T camera system’ and renaming everything T-related ‘TL’ would avoid these issues altogether. Louis Posted September 27, 2016 Share #8 Posted September 27, 2016 Well, it seems that from now on, TL is going to be used for T lenses: https://en.leica-camera.com/World-of-Leica/Leica-News/Global/2016/TL-Lens-Family-Announcement In the Leica site, all of them except 55-135 are already marked as TL: https://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-T/Lenses-for-Leica-T

mjh Posted September 29, 2016 Share #10 Posted September 29, 2016 I thought that S was for Spiegel (mirror) and SL for Spiegellose (mirrorless) There is a multitude of explanations for ‘SL’ (another favourite of mine is SL = SLR – R). Take your pick.
Belle123 Posted September 30, 2016 Share #11 Posted September 30, 2016 (edited) So, it is past bed time by now in Singapore and where are the new camera(s) announcements?? Only new thing I saw from Leica was announcement of leather goods. Really???? If anyone has any updates, please share. Is looking bleaker there will be a new T. You don't discontinue a camera months before new version is announced. Get the new ones still out there before totally gone. A great buy. elopezso Posted September 30, 2016 Share #12 Posted September 30, 2016 According to an M camera forum member: 'Leica Q Singapore Special Edition, Leica M 240 Singapore Special Edition, and Leica Sofort. Source: Facebook Leica Marina Sands event stream'. Nothing more; seems weird to me but what do I know. Best, Elopezso
Learner Posted September 30, 2016 Share #13 Posted September 30, 2016 This (below) from the newsletter of a Leica dealer just returned to North America from Photokina. Please understand that I would not feel comfortable exposing the name of the dealer. ======= "Taking a page from Apple’s playbook, Leica decided not to announce any significant products. “Ve doo our own events,” Herr Anonymous Hun lectured. “Ztay tuned!” "By the winks and nods I saw, at very least it looks like we can expect that a new T series camera and lenses will be announced in 2016." Leica is typically on a 3 year cycle and the T was only announced in April 2014, so plenty of time still... That being said, I agree, some reassuring words would not hurt... I know of no other company that releases a new lens and then pretty much discontinues the only camera on which you can shoot that lens...
Louis Posted October 6, 2016 Share #15 Posted October 6, 2016 And yes! The new "T" will be renamed "TL", and therefore, will continue! .... with 4 K video!.... For more, you can read Dr. Kaufman's interview here! http://www.infofotografi.com/blog/2016/10/wawancara-dengan-dr-andreas-kauffman-dan-stefan-schulz-leica/
elopezso Posted October 6, 2016 Share #16 Posted October 6, 2016 Hi Louis, Thank you for the link and the news. It is very exciting. Am wondering about the timeline, of course. Keep posting your great photos; they are an inspiration. Best, Ed
mjh Posted October 6, 2016 Share #17 Posted October 6, 2016 (edited) And yes! The new "T" will be renamed "TL", and therefore, will continue! .... with 4 K video!.... Whether the T successor will support 4K video or not, in the interview Stephan Schulz only talks about 4K video in the context of the SL using TL lenses (these are a good match as the Super 35 format used in 4K mode resembles APS-C). I agree, however it is strange the it is marked as discontinued at store like B&H before the successor has been announced.
robert blu Posted October 7, 2016 Share #19 Posted October 7, 2016 Strange things happening in the marketing....however I didn't buy the T (event actual prices) for two reasons: lack of anti-dust system and no possibility with actual firmware to disable exposure simulation which is an important point for me. But I like very much the T shape (of course size and weight) and the interface which I find very interesting. Hope the new model, the TL is similar in shape to the actual T and has a similar interface. I admit that this kind of communication and or rumors about discontinuing and a possible new model from one side keep me interested but also looking at what other producer are putting on the market... robert
gbealnz Posted October 7, 2016 Share #20 Posted October 7, 2016 Sorry to say I'm in the same boat as Robert, I have sold my T as well. The indecision of "what's next" plus a buyer that was happy to take it was too much for me. All that remains is a set of strap lugs, not sure what I'll do with them. And like Robert indicates, it gives the eyes time to wander to other manufacturers. I am eyeing the new Fujis a lot closer now. Gary
