biglouis Posted August 3, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) My wife and I love walking around Bloomsbury which is small area between the Kings Cross and Holborn. I'll post some more pictures soon but this was taken at the rear of St Pancras Church near Tavistock Square. There are four statutes like this in a row holding up a portico which I believe is an entrance to the crypt. The statues reminded me of a trip to Florence a few years back. At its time this particular church, built in the early 1800s was the most expensive eclesiastical building since St Pauls. ejd Posted August 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 4, 2006 Great! Bloomsbury may be a small area geographically, but it is rich in many ways -- cultural, intellectual, etc.. The caryatids in the portico of St Pancras Church are surely a nod at the Erechtheum in Athens. Pevsner describes it "as the earliest church in London in a pure neo-Grecian style". It is great to find these little architectural flourishes tucked away. John
