Long Lens on S

I have an S007 and am looking for my best long lens ...in the 300-350 range

What are my best options?

Would be nice if Leica eventually offers an extender, say 1.4x, to use with native lenses, including the 90-280.

The 90-280 will not cover the S sensor ;-)

Another option is the 280/4 APO-Telyt R with the Lei-ko adapter plate. This only focuses to about 20 m on its own, but will focus to infinity with the addition of a 1.4x APO-Extender. You can also ship the lens to Wetzlar and have the infinity focus adjusted so that this is ok with the 280/4 APO alone. This is my long lens combination for use with my S(006).

 

Her's an example - Mark Webber in Jackie Stewart's F1 winning Matra at the Goodwood Revival - handheld 280/4 plus 1.4x APO on S(006)

Not the cheapest of options ;-) Mamiya 645 300/2.8 or Pentax 300 with generic adapters are about the cheapest way to go, unless you have an S-H, S-Contax or a Lei-Ko adapter already, even then a 280/4 costs more than most of the listed lenses....

You're quite right. The 280/4 APO is rare and expensive. However, the image quality is just stellar. The OP wanted to know the best long lens option, as opposed to the best value. MF on the S is fine with the 280/4 plus 1.4x as the optical VF and screen are just fabulous.

I image the latter is far better? I had a C 350mm T* and was never impressed by it even on film....

I actually bought a 210mm Mamiya, which I know, is not thaaat long, but since I hardly ever use tele it seems infinite. 

 

Stepped down it performs quite alright ... and I only paid $25 at Adorama. It has some lens separation, but that doesn't seem to affect the image. 

Oh, it also has a built in hood.

 

It's definitely enough tele for me and I for one feel like it was a really good investment even if the lens sits at home 99% of the time.

Both lenses are amazing, the Hasselblad has the furthest reach and is far more expensive (The Contax lenses can be had for 250 Euro each)

 

The Hasselblad 300mm is not nice for carrying around while the Contax 210 is fine and not too heavy, both have auto focus which works fairly well, but I prefer manual fine tuning especially wide open. The Hasselblad has a central shutter which the Contax lens doesn't the central lens goes up to 1/750th on the Leica bodies (1/800 on the Hasselblad bodies) Don't know exactly what it's useful for on a Leica body since I don't see myself do flash with the 300mm.

FE Tele-Tessar 4/350 T* is a completely different beast when compare with 5.6/350 .... I have CF 5.6/350, FE 4/350 and CFi SA 5.6/350 and in my opinion FE4/350 has the best tonal rendition

What SA selling is diffraction-limited at f5.6, it may be sharp and has highest resolution but I love the tonal gradation of FE 4/350 more ... it may be a personal taste only but worth trying

I just bought a new CF250 to use with my 503 and plan to use that also with my S and the cheap knockoff adapter that I bought on eBay (works perfectly in M mode)

Works just like a native Leica lens. AF is fine, as quick as the 180 S; there is correct Exif info in the files and there is a profile for the lens/camera combination in LR. I have read somewhere, though, that when people send the H lenses to Hasselblad for servicing they come back with new FW that makes AF inoperable with the H-S adapter. Don't know if it's true..., my H300/4.5 works perfectly on the S007.
