freitz Posted August 8, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am in need of a flash for indoors. I used a SF 24D for a while, I prefer to bounce. Would you guys recommend a SF40 or SF64? I was thinking the SF40 since the SF64 might be overkill and a little big for the M. Thanks. Advertisement Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Hi freitz, Take a look here Flash for Indoor SF40 or SF64 Leica M240. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Peter Kilmister Posted August 8, 2016 Share #2 Posted August 8, 2016 The SF40 works well with my M-P 240 and isn't too big. Exposure is adjusted automatically if you tilt the head to create bounce. In fairness I haven't used flash very often ... only when the light levels are really awful.

However at my daughters birthday the light was harsh, all kinds of different yellow light and the room had sunlight from the windows but it didn't help. The SF24D was hard to use since it was a direct flash. Do you find the SF40 powerful enough?
Peter Kilmister Posted August 8, 2016 Share #4 Posted August 8, 2016 Yes, it is powerful. I haven't tried using it for any distance beyond a few metres though. Someone reading this topic might have experience of a distance limit.
cirke Posted August 8, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 8, 2016 (edited) SF-40 has the perfect size for M and HSS, I use it very often Edited August 8, 2016 by erick
jto555 Posted August 9, 2016 Share #6 Posted August 9, 2016 The difference between the SF 40 and the SF 64 is only about 1 stop. The SF 40 is tiny and fits on a Leica very well. The only two (minor) issues with the SF 40 are, (1) the click stops for positioning the head do not easly let the head face walls to the side. I prefer to bounce off wall than ceilings, and (2), the dials on the back are easly moved.

So, it ends up only five variations -2,-1,0,+1 & +2 but nothing in between.
jaapv Posted September 29, 2018 Share #8 Posted September 29, 2018 There is no need for 1/3rd stops on digital like it is on slide film.
Enbee Posted October 10, 2018 Share #9 Posted October 10, 2018 (edited) How are you planning to use the flash. If the room is small, Sometimes I feel SF40 is enough but many a times I have to rely on outside strobes. Snap Happy Posted October 11, 2018 Share #10 Posted October 11, 2018 I find the SF40 very useful in most situations on my M240. I use it frequently in medium-sized rooms with bounce flash. As long as I use ISO 800 (or so) the results are great. The diffuser also works very effectively.
