IOS audio (software) solutions for SL

Hello: I need opinions from Forum contributors. Replacing my 7D with the SL for my fledgling video projects that I hope to see prosper moving forward. When shooting with my 7D, I use a Beachtek box mounted below the camera. With 2 xlr ports, I can run a wired and/or wireless audio into each of the 2 channels, controlling audio levels of each channel. Works extremely well. Using the Beachtek box, I don't need to sync audio, the 2-channels are already written to the camera-native file.

I can't wait any longer for the SL's audio dongle allowing to record into the 2-channel file on the SL. Another accessory that was promoted on their literature almost 1 year ago, but that's another nagging issue.

I am familiar with the Zoom exernal recorders, but I'd prefer to record into primarily my iPad Air, and in a pinch, my iPhone 6S+. I'd like the ability to record directly into the IOS device using the audio port, with an IOS interface that will allow me to control the audio-in levels for each of the 2 channels.

It would be helpful to then be able to add an additional track (or more?) of music or ambient sound on additional tracks at different levels.

I'd sync the audio with the SL file using FCPX. Any opinions would be appreciated!

Hokusai 2 and Twisted Wave are most folks' iOS favourites. Unfortunately, although Audacity keep saying an iOS app is on the way, it has never arrived. I found this app to be excellent on Macs for digitising tapes from my Nakamichi Tape Recorder. It is also supposed to work to record and digitise audio streams from the Internet but I have had a lot of problems with this. I can do it using two Macs but not one (one to stream; one to record; one to rule the world :)).

I am never convinced you can get good audio with a camera mounted or built in mic(s). If you are using outside, the issue is you cannot get a thick enough furry sock on the mic(s) to reduce wind noise. Focusing noise was audible on the videos I have made to date with the SL. Using electronic wind noise reduction is better than nothing but far from perfect. If you don't find the built in Mics are up to the job, I see a lot of professionals using a Tascam recorder with separate mics. You would then use Adobe Premier, Avid or even iMovie to stitch the two together. Adobe Premier or Avid make lip sync easier but you certainly can do it on iMovie. I would recommend against using Final Cut Pro X, as I have a feeling Apple is about to drop it (like they did with Aperture) and the latest version is very far from user friendly. A lot in the industry have moved away from it  to Premier or Avid.

Thanks Wilson. I just downloaded "MultiTrack DAW" and IOS app that works with iPad & iPhone. It's a very powerful IOS app. Just tried recording into the iPad/iPhone with one mike. Still experimenting. Just wonder how the native SL audio will sound once the dongle is available (not yet here in the States).

I suppose if you wanted to use 2 microphones, you would need a stereo male plug 3.5mm (TRS) to 2 mono 3.5mm (TS) female sockets adapter to connect to the Leica audio dongle. These "jack" adapters seem to be getting more and more difficult to get. I wanted a mono male 3.5mm split to 2 x 3.5mm female, to allow my Meridian G-02 Pre-Amp to trigger on and off, both the Benchmark DAC-2L and the Krell 2250e Power Amplifier. In the end I had to buy a short flying lead, which did the same. ¼" mono plug to 2 x ¼" mono socket adapter would have been no problem or 3.5mm stereo but I just could not find this adapter in 3.5mm mono.

BTW did you know the ¼" Jack plug is the oldest connector in the world, still in use? It may have been invented in its current form by the Bell Telephone Company in 1877 for their exchange in Boston, Mass but something very similar was almost certainly in use even earlier, for railway telegraph systems - another bit of useless knowledge for your next pub quiz  :) Pic of a couple of 19th century Bell telephone plugs.
