ctb Posted June 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Your comments and criticisms would be most gratefully recieved, I am a novice at this level of photography and could use all the hints, help and tips you can give me. Photo taken this afternoon of the steam puffer Vic32 usually moored alongside her rusting sister ship the Vital Spark (the original one not the one now moored at Inveraray) Photo has not been touched up or altered in any way. Thank you for looking, and a big thank you if you bothered to comment

stuny Posted June 8, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 8, 2007 Chris - I'd do three things with this. 1. Generally, it's better not to have subjects centered in the image (though this is not a firm rule), and generally you should have more space either in front of or behind the boat, showing either where it is going, or where it has been. 2. Use photo-processing software. In this case I’d try adjusting some of the sliders for exposure and color, making the image livelier. Do it by eye to match your tastes. Chances are you will be pleasantly surprised what the changes can do. You might even want to start with an auto exposure correction control and just see what happens. You can always reverse it, or tone it down, or enhance it. 3. I’d use the sharpening tool to make the image sharper. Again do it by eye using your taste. This image should sharpen very nicely, but be careful not to over use the control, which could make the image look artificial.
marc_dufour Posted June 8, 2007 Share #3 Posted June 8, 2007 Stuart had resumed perfectly what you could do to improve your picture. Said that, it's a good beginning. Carry on ! Marc
ctb Posted June 9, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted June 9, 2007 Stuart & Marc many thanks for your kind help, very much appreciated. I took the original image, cropped it to reposition the boat, and adjusted various levels of hue, saturation, colors and contrast, and this is the end result, How does this version compare in your eyes to the original ? Am I getting there ? Thank you Chris
marc_dufour Posted June 9, 2007 Share #5 Posted June 9, 2007 Chris, This has imprved a lot ! Maybe a slight yellow cast, you coulld correct without problem. And, as you enlarged a little, perhaps a little sharpenig... But it works, you're working in right direction. Marc
