.... yes .... but then all the usual suspects would moan about the 'crappy slow f4.5 Leica lenses'

manufacturers like Leica that rely almost entirely on 'quality' as unique selling point are hamstrung by their own desire to be niche.

If they went down the 'cheaper and cheerful' route I doubt they have the scale to do the 'cheaper' bit .....

Leica already has a set of fast miniMF lenses. If I were Leica I'd be considering a small selection of f4.5 lenses that are smaller, lighter and with the S lens mount to compliment the range we have now. Maybe even a 90-180 f4.5-5.6 zoom.

Add that to a mirrorless version of the S and Leica are back in the game.

It appears the X1D is delayed yet again. Arghhhhh! I am almost losing my patience. One thing, among many other positive attributes, Leica does not do this. When Leica announces a new product, is ready!

Yep, and after the SL's release, it took Leica a year to finally get tethering to work (and I know they weren't the only players at-fault in this), and it took them a year to finally get the audio dongle to market. Both of these "late-to-the-game" features were in the SL's premiere product release marketing materials.

Is there news?

What were you told about the availability date? I was told in mid-October when I took the demo that no date had been set and that realistically the first deliveries wouldn't be until January at the earliest. Do you think it will be later than that?

Fuji would be delighted.

The SL was available and ready to use shortly after announcement. You would do better aim your ire at the M240, which wasn't generally available until many months after announcement.

You're correct in the products' timeline.  I purchased both shortly after their release.  No ire in my response, just the simple fact that the SL was less of a complete product when I purchased it, because it could not do "everything" stated in their product literature at the time of release. They were late, plain and simple. Have since sold the M, and love the SL with my M lenses, tethering and audio dongle included!

"Patience is a virtue."

I'm very happy with my current cameras and need nothing. I'd love an X1D and a wide lens, just like I'd love a CFV-50c back, so I could learn what they see and how it works with my vision. As a result, however long it takes for the X1D to arrive or for me to work out the money to buy one, the other, or both, will do just fine.

What I really need to do is get out and make more photographs. The time will then melt away...  :D

I'm sure the new X!D is going to be a amazing camera in the right hands...................My mate has the ugly SL and that also takes lovely pictures in the right hands, but neither of them compare to the Leica S007..............period :) :) :)

Why does it always have to resolve down to "my favorite is better than your favorite"?

Show some photographs and don't bother telling people what camera you took them with; it's unimportant...

True, but then we'd have to eliminate much of the forum discussion, which tends to be gear-centric, including best bags and straps and cases and such.

I often add the words "for me" when discussing my choices and assessments; while that should be implied, there are others here who would otherwise interpret comments as statements of universal truth, because that's how they view things.

I don't list gear used when exhibiting prints.  The only folks who ask about equipment, or technical matters, are other photographers.....nature of (some) beasts.

On gear forums, I list the gear used because that's what viewers on gear forums want to see. I have to add it manually on Flickr because the EXIF is always stripped out of my JPEGs, on purpose. I have about 6000 photos displayed on Flickr.

On my (currently not publicly accessible) portfolio website, there is no gear listed whatever. I closed public access to the portfolio website when I closed my business, after taking another career position that meant I didn't have time to manage the portfolio properly. Since I've now retired from that position, I'll likely reopen the website soon. :-)

I was in London dealers today and was told they are expecting 1st shipment next week but that they were going to speak to Hasselblad tomorrow to confirm numbers being shipped.

Whilst there, I held and used both SL and X1D... the EVF on the SL is beautiful. On the X1D it is functional. Did not much care for the handgrip on the SL.

I left a deposit on the X1D on the basis that much of what I did not like about it, was software based and am hoping, will be sorted on release. If not, then my deposit gets returned.

Looks like I will be getting a new SL and Noctilux 0.95 for Christmas. I will get conformation on Monday from the Leica dealer in Scotland.................as long as the price is as advertised on his website I will get it.

My mate in Kl has a new Leica M to SL adapter so I will get that when I get home next weekend. :) :)

I don't remember shutter and re-cock sound from my June demo, so must have been fairly unobtrusive.  But a recent video interview on LuLa presented an obnoxious clanking sound, which seemed to startle even Kevin Raber, who gave an otherwise glowing impression.  I hope the production model doesn't sound like that.

Or like this....
