Best deal ever on a used M8.2? Used market price range?

Hey guys! A new member here :)

 

As stupid as it may sound I still cannot believe I finally got a Leica camera myself. Been waiting for this moment a very long time, gone through a "GAS cloud" switching systems from A7II, X100T, X-Pro1 and finally settled with an M8.2 which I got in mint condition, 105 shutter count, for only 1100€! I first thought there's gotta be something wrong with it, for the price to be set so low, but due to irresistable price I immediatly bought it and did not regret a single €. I'm using it with previously acquired Minolta M-Rokkor 28mm f2.8 coded, and without the common white spots problem, which I won on Ebay for 310€ incl. hood, uv/ir cut filter and I find the combo superb in it's performance.

 

I'm wondering what's the actual price range now in mid 2016 for a used M8.2 as I can't seem to find any, anywhere. Seems like I had lots of luck  ;)

As far as I can remember the M8.2 varies among 1900 and 2300€, so I think you had a good deal. I found it much more pleasant than my M8, the sapphire glass gives an easy mind and the shutter has less noise. With a 28 I found it a perfect combo. congrats!

Hi! I know your struggle, the market is basically dry. I found it on local Balkan advertising site similar to Ebay-kleineinzeigen if you know that one. Austrian willhaben.at had a few good offers a while ago. Google's time search seems to do a pretty good job too. But I have to mention I took a risk with buying one without trying it out. Also where are you from? If I happen to spot one cheap, ill pm you.

Through Ebay-kleineinzeigen I found an auction in eBay for a M8 with shutter, viewfinder lines and leatherette upgraded.

I got it for a nice price too and received it yesterday. I only had time to turn it on and confirm it takes pictures, so far so good :)

Hi, I am new comer. I am now considering amongst M8.2, A7II and X-Pro 2 which are around the same price range in my place ( though M8.2 is abut higher).

I like the M8.2 but it's already a product of 8 years ago while the A7II has the modern technology and X-Pro 2 has the same as well with nice colour rendering.

Anybody could share your view point and suggestion?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

 

It depends to a very great extent on what experience you have with r/f focussing and the type of photography you intend to pursue.

 

The Sony, in particular, is almost the polar-opposite of the M8.2 in use.

The Fuji is sort-of a half-way house between the Sony and the Leica.

The Leica requires a very different mindset from the others.

 

Are you familiar with using a Leica M- type camera?

Would you be 100% comfortable with manual, rangefinder-based focussing?

Would the complete lack of zoom lens availability be OK?

Would the relatively poor IQ at high ISO speeds be unimportant?

 

If you answered 'Yes' to the above then an 8.2 would be a fine choice.

If you answered 'No' to any / all of the above then perhaps you need to give the matter more thought.

 

Could you rent/borrow an M-type camera for, say, a week to see how you manage with it?

I'm sure others will offer their advice but my thoughts;

 

The Sony and Fuji are both rather different - one is full frame and both are based around AF system lenses (although you can use M lenses with them), and they offer multiple metering modes and features. 

 

The Leica is unique being a rangefinder manual focus camera, best suited to wideange - short telephoto lenses.

 

Have you considered the cost of a small system? Camera plus a couple of lenses?

 

You need to think about what you want to use the camera for, your preferred lens ranges and what features you think you will need.

Thanks for all your replies.

I have been using DSLR with different range of lenses for over 10 years. At that time when my little daughter was still a baby / kid, I wanted a faster system to capture the fast moment. Time flies, she is now 10 years old and doesn't like to be a model for me. In recent years, my equipment are always laid in the box and only be used when having a trip. I admit that DSLR in some occasions could not be replaced by a RF but its heavy weight that really become unaffordable. Although I am looking for a RF like/light weight machine, I would keep DSLR as well for events while the RF, if really go ahead, would only equip a couple of lenses for leisure use or portrait only, such as 35/2 etc.

I didn't try RF before but should be OK if bought. I just thinking whether a 8 years old machine is still worth to buy in considering its lifetime vs the younger A7II / X-Pro 2 at a bit lower price.

Yes.

Always just IMHO, of course.

But you really must love the coupled rangefinder combined with a relatively conservative wide-angle to mid-length long-focus focal-length lens shooting experience if you are going to enjoy using a Leica M.

About this aspect there is no real middle-ground. Any doubts you have about this then the chances are you will be disappointed.

 

The technology is what it is.

In the hands of an 'understanding' photographer the M8 will always be able to produce absolutely stunning photographs for as long as the body can function. Why wouldn't it? Shutter-counts of well over 100,000 are cited with no problems experienced along the way.

 

The M8 has a few well-known drawbacks compared with today's cutting-edge offerings but think what HCB managed to achieve with his 1929 Leica I. Could he have captured the same images with an M8.2? I believe so.

 

The M8.2 has probably bottomed-out price-wise so if, at some future time, you need to sell-on and perhaps go to something more modern you will probably be able to recoup your outgoings. The good news is that even if used Leica lenses seem to be (for someone coming in from the outside) very expensive to buy any lenses you do buy (if you buy wisely) will usually increase in value.

Just sharing my experience, when my M8.2 was broken due to salt water, I am in position to decide whether to get another M8 or X-Pro2. I decided to get an M8u (couldn't afford an M8.2). It is because I like the Leica RF experience, that probably can't be replaced by any other cameras. I only ever tried X-Pro1 and found that its handling and feel still couldn't replace a Leica's. Is it worth it? Well, I didn't regret my purchase. I also have Fuji X-E1 that produced better image, technically speaking, but I shoot more with the M8u. 

 

X-Pro2 is now improved and better mimic the RF experience, allowing us to shoot manually through optical viewfinder. It has small patch in the viewfinder corner to help confirming the focus by focus peaking. If you want the latest technology and greater versatility while having somewhat RF experience, X-Pro2 may be the best option.

 

How about go to camera shops and try those cameras in hand?
