HI Guy,

The frame lines change as you change focal lengths. That was, I understand, one of the reasons for the redesign from verison one to verison two - VI had trouble with frame lines so the mechanism was redesigned in V2. Glass is the same. It is a great lens for travel and my most used. I would like to see a 35 50 75 version next. Can't believe they are stopping production.

Cheers

Howard (in Hong Kong)

Does highlight Leica's dependence on components sourced from single suppliers - glass, sensors, semiconductors, firmware. If the supply dries up, the product's in trouble.

I'm glad I have a TE, it's a versatile and capable lens.

When I bought my M8 (chrome) the dealer had in the shop a used Tri Elmar chrome, perfect... I was tempted but the paycheck for the M8 was still in fron of me... passed away... for what I have read here, maybe I'll go and see if it is still there: I do not worry about f4 and the Tri Elmar is a lens I thought a lot of in terms of "one day or another....": if it's no more built, suspect the used prices shall be on the rise...

Glad I found a second hand one a few weeks ago. :) It's a great lens for any shooting where you do not need something faster than 4.0.

I hope the rumors are false as I've had a new one on order for a couple of months - I hope I will still eventually see it turn up.

Btw, if anyone needs a WATE/finder combo immediately I have one on that I ordered on will-call at my local photo dealer that I'm going to pass on. I'm happy with the CV 15 which I now have coded. The MATE is more useful for my shooting style.

PM me if you're interested in the WATE and I can give you the dealer info after I've let them know now that I'm back in town and made my decision.

Gone were the days when Leica designed and made all the lens glass...

There are said that some asph elements are now from the east. Can't verify...

Does anyone know what the differences are between the 1st and 2nd version, and if there is a price difference between the two on the second-hand market?

2nd version of the original Tri-Elmar wears engraved, depth of field markings for all three focal lengths. It also has better ergonomics, IMHO. Yes, and it uses a smaller filter in size E49; "slim" version always preferred. I forget if their was a price uplift or no.

If anyone knows where I can find one of the later revision (prefer 6 bit) Tri-Elmars in stock, please send me a site mail. I was going to pick one up later in the summer, but it seems I need to get moving now....

Not good news. This is the next lens on my list to acquire. I was planning on a new TE so that I have a coded lens with 28/35/50 to walk about with while I sent my 28+35+50 lenses in for coding.

So, now do I rush out and buy a TE from somewhere if they are in stock, or do I wait? Bugger!

Even though I own 28-35-50 very nice primes the TE is my most used lens. I love it and IMO it fits perfectly to the small size , fast , unobstrusive M package.

cheers, tom

Thanks Tom. that was my expectiation, at least from a walkabut point of view. For most daytime walkabout situations, F4 is fine for me. I am a little concerned about the distortion on the 28, but I will wait to see what it's really like. Hopefully I will pick mine up tomorrow.

Hi David!

Yes agree completely. Leica has just so much in resources, people and material, and they need to focus on the more important.

All MATE owners, think this way- they will be rare, and more valuable!

:-)

Glad I got one some moths ago.

While I own some fast glass for the M I try to avoid shooting wide open because its a lottery to get the focus right as long as the subject is not still.

For me shooting wide open is not the (only) typical M-shooting. I rather think shooting with a little more DOF is the way to go with Leica M (again, as long as there is enough light). Your are faster, you include more of the surrounding.

My 35/1.4, 50/1.0 and 75/1.4 stay a lot at home for this reason and might be sold.

As a fast lens 28/2.0 works best for me and eventually the 50/1.4asph (which does not suffer of focus-shift as the Noctilux).

What I wanted to say is that I find the flexibilty of the TE more important than more fast lenses.

cheers, tom

Dave: distorsion might be there but for me its not a reason to use the 28/2.0 when I have enough light for the TE. However I dont shoot much architecture, which might be another story.
