Albert Andersen Posted May 24, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 24, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Flash SF 64 can be used in HSS mode (high speed sync). In the menu for flash settings in SL the fastest shutter speed is 1/125 sec. It means that SL does not support HSS, or is there something I have misunderstood? For sports shooting, I need a shutter speed of min. 1/250 sec. and the flash for softening shadows in the sportsmens face. They are almost always looking down when they are biking, and without flash the face is too dark. When the T-mode on SL is selected and the shutter speed is set to 1/250 sec. does SF 64 beep for underexposure. Are there some who have a solution to this? Advertisement Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Hi Albert Andersen, Take a look here SF64 flash and HSS with the SL. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LocalHero1953 Posted May 24, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 24, 2016 If you set a faster shutter speed than normal slow sync, the SF64 display switches to TTL-HSS. I have never used HSS before, and only recently got the SF64. I have only tried a limited destruction test on the system and not used it in anger, but I noticed that I was getting over-exposures. I will assume this is user error until I've looked at it more closely.

The menu displays are the setting for the MINIMUM shutter speed in A and P modes (on the camera). What ever you set will be the lowest available shutter speed the camera uses in these modes when a TTL flash is used, regardless of what the ambient meter says.. But the shutter speeds can go higher than the one you set, all the way to 1/8000. The slow sync settings do not apply in M and T modes (on the camera). If you use M or T modes you can ignore the slow speed sync settings. the slow sync settings menu is a huge FAIL on Leica's part. There is no way to set this to *OFF* so in A and P modes (on the camera) you are always forced into slow speed flash sync mode. Leica don't fully understand how a working photographer would like a TTL flash system to operate (or an EVF for that matter). But they have improved on the disaster that was firmware 1.2. SO there is hope. Gordon
LocalHero1953 Posted May 27, 2016 Share #4 Posted May 27, 2016 (edited) You can force it into HSS in A mode if you push it: set ISO to (say) 50000 and aperture to 5 - it takes the shot at 1/400 (in my living room at night). But the shot is grossly overexposed, so it's not much use. I'm just beginning to investigate the SF64 to find those settings where it CAN be used reliably. Albert Andersen Posted May 28, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted May 28, 2016 (edited) I have tested some options with SF64 in HSS mode. SL is set in "T" mode and 1/500 sec. Then adjust the ISO to a value which gives the desired aperture. To avoid overexposure due to strong flash light, I have found that the aperture should not be greater than f: 8.0 Thanks to Gordon for advice. This picture is taken in a darkened room with bright light through the window. SL, 24/90, 25mm, ISO 400, 1/500 sec, f: 8.0 and SF64 in TTL HSS mode. (No PP) Albert Welcome, dear visitor!
