In the early 1980s, I once chased a mountain lion through the Del Mar Heights neighborhoods just to the north of Torrey Pines State Beach, and Los Penosquitos Lagoon overlooking the valley.   He tried desperately to get through an 8' wood fence to get to someone's dog that was tied on their patio.   The scratches and teeth marks on the fence were enormous.  I tracked him back down to Torrey Pines State Beach where he took off up the riiverbed.  He got away that night to seek prey another day.  I loved working La Jolla, Torrey Pines, and Del Mar Heights.   One of the first cases I worked there was a cattle rustling case from the ranch that ran from Torrey Pines to Horseman's Park through the valley roughly where Hwy 56 runs today.   There used to be the ruins of an historic adobe house about halfway between Torry Pines and Horseman's Park.  Those were great times.

hepcat,

Wow, what a wonderful and exciting time you had back in the good old days in the Del Mar and Los Penasquitos Lagoon areas!

I volunteer at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and live just on the very south edge of Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve.

There are still wild creatures roaming here: deer, coyotes, bob cats, peregrine falcons, hawks and numerous others.

Shaw's Agave plant, taken with Leica DMR, 35-70mm zoom, ISO 200, f/4, 1/350s.

Cheers!!!

You are fortunate indeed to get to work there!   And I got to work there when the area between Torrey Pines and Mira Mesa was undeveloped back country with a ranch house or two.  There were no streets there then, just ranch roads.  It was a great time to get to experience that area.  Sorrento Valley had just begun to develop.   The State Park and Beach remain one of my favorite SoCal places, although I've not been back now for nearly 30 years.
