EF Lenes for SL?

Recommended Posts

It's not what you're hoping for because it doesn't control the aperture -- however I used the Fotodiox EF to M adapter with the M to T adapter on SL. Had it for a day, and sent it back to B&H. Took a few shots with my EF 70-200/2.8L II and EF 300/2.8L II and didn't have any fun doing. Results were very good. The adapter was very tight mounting to the M to T adapter.

In the meantime all adapters for almost all lenses are available.

Check the Novoflex site for the best quality - often with single adapters.

You can also adapt the lens to M and use the official M to T adapter from Leica.

Check ebay and amazon, you will find plenty.

I have in the meantime adapters for all lenses I ever bought, among them also Canon EOS.

Stephan

And yes, it is fun to use these lenses, especially Contax, Nikon and the very old Pentax. The Canon are optically excellent - especially the teles - but they are less fun, because they rely on AF. It is sometimes hard work without AF, but I think worth it. By the way, the old FD lenses are even more worth it, because you usually get them for tiny money.

Sometimes I have the impression that today people are too stupid to use cameras without aperture priority. Or many believe they are so stupid, because every time they mention adapters, they complain about it.

But this is really the fun, taking photos like it used to be with the old big cameras with photographic plates, where anything could be attached (even a simple hole), but without all the difficulties and without the large bulk of weight.

So have fun (and stop this ridiculous complaining ...     Mommy, Daddy, there is no aperture priority, waaaaaaah ...        )

And if you need AF and  the latest features for productivity, buy the SL AF lenses, or a DSLR. Is this so difficult to grasp ??

Stephan,

Lack of AF is inconsequential to me. But an adapter for Canon EF lenses that does not let me control the aperture is of no value to me whatsoever. That takes a dedicated adapter with power and control capabilities.

Just because you enjoy playing with dysfunctional stuff is no reason to go on berating other people. You seem to be doing this a lot lately.

Why not simply have a look at the Novoflex site and read what they are offering ?  Maybe you will be surprised.

Look for something with "iris-control". Or is it fotodiox ... well, you know how to search ....

I did. There are no Canon EF to Leica SL/T adapters listed.

Does anybody know if there is an Canon EF adapter in the works for the Leica SL?  I own quite a few EF lenses and it would be great to use them on the SL.  I assume AF and Stabilization will not be possible.

Read carefully the caveats.

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Canon-EOS-EF-Lens-Objektiv-adapter-to-Leica-M-L-M-mount-Ring-M8-M9-M-E-M-EOS-L-M-/221829090083?hash=item33a60b4b23:g:wZcAAOSwyQtVqKDJ

and another one

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Canon-EOS-EF-Lens-Adapter-to-Leica-M-LM-Camera-Mount-Adapter-For-M9-M8-M7-/280736741746?hash=item415d36b972:m:m6afX69Yw6ov7V8MKaxGaLA

If you look for it from time to time you will find more. Because mine is actually a different one, but I cannot find it right now (I have to admit it is a noname product, which makes it dysfunctional, I probably have to feel ashamed, to do this to a Leica). But I feel not responsible for all possible offerings. Anybody capable of reading can check the internet and will find more noname offerings from China - maybe not all at all times.

Is this a reason not to talk about it ?

If you have only Canon EOS lenses, wouldn't it be wiser to go towards Canon M (mirrorless) ? Many expect them to go fullframe sooner or later, and there exists an adapter that supports all features 100-percent.

If you rely on this functionality, there is no better choice.

Hi, how about Nikon mount?

Is there any?

Yes, for Nikon you find many options. Usually there are two different types: For the older lenses with aperture ring and another one for the G type lenses without aperture ring. The G type adapter works usually also with the older type.

Maybe there is one exception, I think you cannot use the new 300mm PF with fresnel lens, because it works only on the newest Nikon cameras. I do not know the details, maybe check with Rockwell (the much hated), or another internet photo guru.

Or write a note to B&H, they have maybe more options. Or fotodiox, metabones, etc.   I am sure I missed some.

I use for Nikon the K&F Concept (to M adapter) but for the purist the Novoflex are better suited. Use their Adapterfinder http://www.novoflex.com/en/products/adapters/adapter-finder/

They have an almost complete selection of adapters for T/SL (only eos is missing ;-).

I also have a single Nikon to T adapter, but it is noname (check ebay or amazon from time to time, they come and go, and sometimes offer discounts.)

I actually prefer the stacked adapters, because I can leave the M to T always on the camera. This is quite clean (for my sense of purism).   ;)

Stephan

I forgot to mention the non-AF lenses. I have none, but as far as I know they are compatible. (Ask a specialist before you buy any adapter, just to be sure to be sure ;-).

Yes, a dumb adapter with no aperture control. Useless for my purposes, unless I'm focusing on using mirror telephoto lenses.

BTW, that's not a Novoflex product.  -_-

Novoflex makes the LET/NIK mount for this purpose. I haven't used it, but my experience with other Novoflex adapters has been very good.

In addition, I've used a Rayqual Nikon F to Leica M adapter to fit Nikon lenses to the SL using the M Adapter T behind it. I would say the Novoflex LET/NIK is probably better if you're specializing in very long telephotos; there's vignetting from the M mount throat diameter with very long lenses. (I see this with the Sigma 600mm f/8 Mirror Tele I have in Nikon mount, but i use it so rarely it's not really important to me.)

I have a full line of Canon/Zeiss EF mount lenses and also about 15 Leica R lenses with a Leitax conversion to Canon mount. I use these lenses on the SL occasionally. This Kipon is the best adapter I have found to mount the Canon lenses on the SL (assuming you already have the M to SL adapter):

http://www.adorama.com/KALCMEOS.html

I just set the Canon lenses to a good all-around aperture using a Canon body (f5.6 for example) and then control exposure with the camera. I actually use the lenses the same way on my Canon bodies, due to the requirements for my line of work, which is timelapse cinematography, so the SL works exactly like the Canon bodies in that regard. Lack of AF isn't an issue unless you are shooting fast moving subjects.

That's great if you want to lug around a Canon body as a lens control device, or are going to use one lens opening for however long you will be away from your Canon body. (Of course, MANUALLY controlled lenses with EF lens mount adaptations work fine...)

Again, it's mostly a waste of time for most folks use, IMO. But there will always be some niche that will find it useful, which is why various equipment manufacturers make all this stuff.

(I mostly use Leica R lenses on the SL. They work very well, with full control of aperture, focus, etc.)

Maybe it would be worthwhile to ask Kipon about their future plans, namely support for the SL.

They have already an AF EOS adapter for NEX:      http://www.adorama.com/KANEXEOSAF.html

The description is a bit unclear. With or without AF, probably without.

But maybe worth a mail for a Canon owner.

This seems to be the model supporting AF:       http://www.adorama.com/KANEXEOSAF2.html

Personally, I see absolutely no point putting an EF lens on an SL. You lose the two things that are useful, AF and IS. There are plenty of cheap, wonderful lenses that will allow full functionality on a SL. Anything with an aperture ring and decent manual focus.

When I want to use an EF lens I put it on a body that gets the best from it and can utilise all its functionality. A Sony.

For what it's worth, the Kipon stuff is pretty well made and machined. Not quite as nice as the Leica or Novoflex adapters, but definitely better than any of the 3rd tier products (Fotodiox, Rayqual, etc). You can tell that they are engineering/manufacturing them from scratch. I think Adorama saw that and jumped on board, as they are now the main US distributor. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Kipon has something in the works for the SL.

I also believe that Stefan Steib is working on a solution to supply an SL compatible mount for his H-Cam Master tilt-shift adapter. This would not only allow you to mount EF lenses on the SL, but would also provide tilt-shift capabilities for those lenses (currently the solution only works for Sony E mount bodies, but it's very slick).

Interesting that you hold them in such high esteem.

I have (or had ... might have sold them) several Kipon adapters. They seemed a cut above Fotodiox but not on par with RayQual or Novoflex with respect to tolerances and machining quality. They're a bit less expensive than the RayQuals, but the ones I had didn't include front or back caps (the RayQual and Novoflex include back caps at least). Their M mount adapters don't include the clever cam arrangement that locks the M rangefinder at a specific distance to aid in focus setting.

Difference of opinion. I'd take a RayQual mount adapter for Leica M over the Kipon equivalent. But I'm pretty much out of the lens adaptation game nowadays other than using R and M lenses on OEM adapters with the SL. I've done enough lens adaptation stuff since 2004 to realize that in most cases the only ones that really work for me are adaptations orchestrated by the OEM manufacturer.

Maybe I was being too harsh on Rayqual. The only one I have owned is a Contax to EF adapter from quite a few years ago, so they may well have improved their quality since then. I am pretty sure that Kipon has also improved their quality in the last 3-4 years as well.
