barjohn Posted April 28, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 28, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Q has been out longer than the SL and yet no firmware update equivalent to that released for the SL. There have been numerous posts on this forum with wish lists for this update and it seems Leica responded to those similar wish list items for the SL but forgot about the Q users. Come-on Leica it has been a long time that we have been waiting.

Voxen Posted April 28, 2016 Share #3 Posted April 28, 2016 Its seems to be the firmware updates wave at the moment, so I guess the Q's one is coming soon.

matlep Posted April 28, 2016 Share #6 Posted April 28, 2016 It wont come. And most important, if it do come anyway it will not have any of the requested updates. They will save them for the Q-P or Q-D or whatever it will be called.
beez Posted April 28, 2016 Share #7 Posted April 28, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) It wont come. And most important, if it do come anyway it will not have any of the requested updates. They will save them for the Q-P or Q-D or whatever it will be called. My previous experience with digital M cameras going back the M8, M9, etc., tells me this is probably true. Cameras these days - even Leicas - are all about marketing the next version, that will come in a year or two, and probably at a higher price. The SL is not exactly flying off the shelves, which is why they chose to do the upgrades, while the Q has a huge order backlog, so there's not a lot of company incentive to invest a lot of R&D time on a camera that's pretty darn good right out of the box. The 1.1 update was really necessary to fix the banding, the rest is wish list stuff. There's things I'd like changed, like shooting DNG only instead of DNG+jpeg, but I'm not holding my breath.
kikouyou Posted April 28, 2016 Share #8 Posted April 28, 2016 Fuji has a great track record of updating all their lineup including old cameras. I do not see why Leica would not do the same. This is called taking care of your customers. In the case of the M there is a lot of marketing indeed with a lot of variation around this design, but when there is a FW update, all the M are getting it. The marketing variation is more cosmetic than FW. As per the Q, it is fairly usable with 1.1 but there are a few improvements that would really help me: - In MF, I need the SET button to cycle auto magnification between 1:1, 1:3 and 1:6 - The under-exposure issue in Auto ISO need to be fixed. - The AEL/AFL buttons should allow toggle rather than constant push to get the function performed with reset after shutter activation. - The AEL/Zoom button should go into function choice with long-press (when toggle will be there indeed) like the other function button. - Metering mode should be added to this button as an option. - I would love to be able allocate the video button to zoom (I do not do videos). - The mid press on the shutter should have the possibly to AEL too (that would save a function button).
Guest VVJ Posted April 29, 2016 Share #9 Posted April 29, 2016 Fuji has a great track record of updating all their lineup including old cameras. I do not see why Leica would not do the same. The Leica Q worked though when it came out, the Fuji's to a much lesser extent... The first generation of Fuji X-T1 suffered from light leaks and mushy buttons. Whereas the light leaks were fixed for free, the mushy buttons were never addressed, at least not in the US...
barjohn Posted April 29, 2016 Author Share #10 Posted April 29, 2016 A button to change focus mode would be great as having to dive into menus is a no go. The same can be said of a few other functions.
jlindstrom Posted April 29, 2016 Share #11 Posted April 29, 2016 Would be nice to have a 2.0 firmware for the Q with some improvements, for sure. But considering the update speed on the X cameras, I'm not holding my breath. The SL upgrade with the big improvements is not very Leica style actually, so should cobsider it one off. matlep Posted April 29, 2016 Share #13 Posted April 29, 2016 (edited) What are Q-P, Q-D? Is there something to read about them? TIA, H. No, they are just figments of my imagination. But if you look at how the M series has evolved it makes sense that the next generation Q will have a name in that direction, compare: M9 -> M9-P - M-E M -> M-P -> M-D And so on.. The P often is just a small development of the basic concept which often includes reducing to the "essentials" And now with adding the "D" reducing even more to the "Essentials" So who know what the future will bring? But I don´t think it will bring a useful firmware upgrade to the Q, thats for sure.... Edited April 29, 2016 by matlep

sumolux Posted May 27, 2016 Share #17 Posted May 27, 2016 (edited) For what it is worth: Don't remember where I read it here on the forum,, but someone with a Q had contact with Leica already and reported back that the update would in sometime in July....Anyway, I am enjoying the Q immensely with or wthout updates; for my uses there is nothing critically wrong. Peter L Posted May 27, 2016 Share #18 Posted May 27, 2016 ....Anyway, I am enjoying the Q immensely with or wthout updates; for my uses there is nothing critically wrong. It is interesting that you say that : I find nothing wrong with the Leica Q as it is today, it delivers excellent images with a minimum of effort, anyone can be a decent photographer with that camera, it is the easiest versatile camera ever to operate, missed shots are almost no-existent I am somewhat surprised at the large number of request for changes via a firmware update, when I had a M6TTL , R9, and other Leica film cameras, there were no updates, one learned to understand the tool and work with it. The Leica T firmware updates provided huge improvements in speed and handling , with the Leica Q , I cant see that happening. Although I will be thankful for any improvements, the Leica Q is good enough for me as it is.
prk60091 Posted May 28, 2016 Share #19 Posted May 28, 2016 (edited) After traveling on holiday to Hawaii for the past two weeks i can say shooting the Q was the most fun I have had shooting in many a year. Using the camera on a daily basis for two weeks gave me a deeper understanding of the camera. I did not notice any technical deficiencies and I for one am not interested in many of the "requests" in the upgrade thread. They will not enhance the image or streamline the operation of the camera--for me. The results look great, the operation of the camera for me was simple, and really that is all i require. I have many "keepers" and will post shortly in image thread. Edited May 28, 2016 by prk60091
