M8 top plate material?

I have a black chrome M8 and always thought that the top plate was made from brass.

 

However, I have a few scratches on it and it appears to be made from some sort of silver coloured alloy.

 

I've seen M8.2s with worn black paint and they're definitely made of brass.

 

Did Leica use 2 different top plates for the M8/M8.2?

No.

 

The silver you see, I believe, is a coating applied prior to the black chrome or black paint.

My M8 is also showing some silver color beneath the black chrome I hope to get the brass toning soon

You won't get brassing on a black chrome camera, unless extremely worn or you take to it with a grinder.

Brass plated with copper, nickel, then chrome for silver camera.  Black chrome may be different.  

 

If you want it to brass, use black paint.
