Leica SL is an expensive joke

So, I took the SL with the 24-90 for my first real outting today. Well, aside from the unbelievably slow start up time which no camera I have come across has ever suffered from, even going back to 2003, after the first few shots the camera had a black evf/rear monitor. First I thought I had the lens cap on but alas that wasn't the case. The I notice no aperture info was being passed between the lens and the camera. I detached and re-attached the lens and problem went away. I have bever detached the lens from the camera from new so I am baffled how any dirt could have got into the lens contacts, specially since Leica is targeting the pros with this so called weather sealed camera. I find it hilarious and delusional that in their launch promo Leica was portraying its use in an F1 setting. Ya, right, whatever. And what annoys most is that this piece of junk is worth £8200.

Then you are as delusional as Leica. All top end cameras - and yes I had had Nikon Dx and Canon 1D series cameras - take no more than a fraction of a second. So before you let your ego get in the way do your research. If you one of the cards out if may go down to a second but what is the point of having two card slots. I missed a shot of a boat approaching because of the slow start up

Two cards in mine, no problem. Nearly instant on. Why not sell it or return it?

Delusional? Don't think so. My SL is sitting right in front of me, I turned it on and off five times before replying. Near instant on. 2 x Sandisk 32gb cards, one is UHS-II.

Well, to you, it's obviously not worth £8,200.

To many others, it is.

Bad choice combined with bad luck in your case. I wish you better luck next time around with a camera more suited to what you want.

No startup complaints here. The SL has grown on me.  If that makes me delusional, so be it.  No camera can satisfy everybody, so why not take it back for a refund, or if you think it is defective get it exchanged.   Or sell it and cut your losses.   I am sure someone not as smart as you are can be duped into buying it.

I think the thread title should be:

'am I an idiot and doing something wrong?'

or

'do you think my camera/lens is faulty and needs replacing ?'

If you bought a Porsche on the basis of a lot of favourable reviews and it broke down after a days use would you post on the Porsche Forum:

'Porsches are an expensive joke'....... 'this piece of junk is worth 100k'.......

by all means throw your dolly out of the pram but don't imply the rest of us are idiots because your camera doesn't work properly.

Leica have an unrivalled reputation in replacing without question and repairing as required without cost unless well out of warranty.

I suspect one of the pins on the connector strip on the camera body is a bit sticky (they are spring loaded) and putting the lens on and off a few times will cure it.

Slow start up times are almost always card issues ...... wipe and re-format in SD Formatter .... and if that doesn't reduce start up to a second or less then there is a dodgy card or camera problem.... and if different cards have the same issue it is the latter. If you bought it from a reasonable dealer they should exchange it.

In the UK you can't return an item for refund after a 30 days or so. So, you are saying that I should be dishonest and sell a defect camera to an unsuspecting buyer? You must be a very moral person in life then.

You must be one very luck owner then. Just read about all the other slow start complaints in this forum. They must all be false, right?

I would never suggest fraud or dishonesty.   If the camera is defective you can have it repaired or replaced by Leica.  I can understand why you feel angry.   When my EVF died a few weeks after I purchased mine, I was not at all happy but Leica did replace it.   I am not naive enough to say that the camera is perfect because in 55 years of photography I haven't yet found a perfect one.

When you imply that rest of us have been duped into buying a "joke," you are just being rude.

Firstly, I would like to genuinely thank you for your suggested solution. I will try them.

However, when did I imply you are an idiot? If I bought a Porsche and it broke down, I will be an idiot not to claim that it was a piece of junk. I mean, who would spend a minimum of £80k and at least not expect their car, any car for that matter, to function as designed, at least for a few years?

In any case I meant no offence and I apologise if I came across as such. However, one lesson I have learnt today is that many people have bloated egos on Internet forums. I think I will refrain from stepping on them in the future.

yes, I have no morals, an ego problem but at least I'm lucky. Part of my luck is not being an ignorant douche like yourself.

I solute my fellow douche then. Cheers

The start-up times of my Canons are quite fast. The SL is definitely behind it especially when using both card slots.

But I noticed that I can start to shoot before the "ready" appears on the top screen. It's possible when the first card slot is 'connected'.

So it took over 30 days for you to first use the camera?  I would still explain it to the dealer....any reputable one will help sort the issue(s).

While I think the OP has overreacted (especially the title), I'm often surprised how forgiving some Leica customers can be.  Some recent threads in the S forum have some horror stories, e.g., this post from Marc, in which he explains that 2 of his 3 S bodies failed, and 4 out of 6 of his S lenses failed....and he's still a fan of the system and will feel better if he learns that issues don't return once repaired....  http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/249551-33-failure-rate-with-leica-s-system/?p=2994119.  And Marc isn't the only one.  I would be livid (especially given S prices)...and not so loyal.

The issues here seem minor by comparison, but Leica does have some QC issues that they can't afford to ignore (and I'm sure they're not). As I've noted elsewhere, even E. Puts has written (apparently since retracted from his site) that Leica customers are often treated as beta testers these days.
