The largest ethnic minority in Burma, the Shans speak a northern Thai language and, since they watch Thai television, can understand standard Thai. That made it possible for me to communicate, as most people do not speak English. Their history is difficult: the Shans fought the British three times in the nineteenth century and in recent decades have been in an intermittent civil war with the Burma Army. Another element of the Shan State population are the hill tribes.

Since the 1960s, under various warlords, the Shan State became a major opium-growing area, with narcotics an important source of revenue; more recently, production of meta-amphetamines for sale in Thailand has supplemented or replaced income from opium. It is difficult to see the economic basis for Chiang Tung, a pleasant town with substantial houses and without obvious signs of poverty, located in a countryside of subsistence agriculture. This indicates that displacement of the narcotics economy that has sustained the town in the past is not likely to be easy or without economic hardship.

A picture that makes you think - and to me that is what a Leica photograph especially should do.

You look at the image and then read it and the one above makes you do this. The end of Lockdown and the queue is social distancing BUT waiting to enter the Louis Vuitton store with the Rolex sign also showing opposite.

You ask yourself did anything change, is the much heralded change in values happen?

That is what a great picture must do and this picture simple at first - it's a queue waiting BUT then you look and see more into the image and ask yourself what is REALLY going on here.

Great pic - well done.

Paul Mac

thanks
