There are those black-and-white images I wish I had shot, so simple, such presence and clarity, though there's an undertow of something beyond this theatre.  Ominous, perhaps, the sense of surveillance, corporate power, very film noir Venetian blind look of the entry walls. It's not so much Citizen Kane but rewinds 1984, and it sends me back to my Facsimile manuscript published, when?, 1984, of course. The layering of the text, Orwell's handwritten manuscript, typed pages, corrections, edits--it's all there, page after page, trying to follow the arc of his creative trajectory. And so it is with your image, layers of light and shade, the shifting tide of ambiguity, outside the glass doors, daring to catch a glimpse inside this think tank? Signage: Guthrie bans guns . . . these premises. . . ." Cryptic--the beginning of a cinema that we can only warily approach. Such an envious shot! A sharp shooter eye you have.

Thank you for your kind words and creative interpretation.  I was disappointed when they tore down the previous theater by Ralph Rapson, but this building is a spectacular success.  When first seen, the building beckons to be photographed in black and white. The architect himself (Jean Nouvel) uses color only sparingly. Those huge black and white portraits of playwrights, perhaps a dozen around the building,  are inspiring.  The person in my photo may very well be Eugene O'Neill, I couldn't determine that.  It is not Tyrone Guthrie though, as his image is one of those in a more prominent location.
