I know that this is not an image & critique type of thread, however I would very tentatively like to suggest that this picture may benefit from a little more restrained / subdued postprocessing. I mean no offence at all, I just venture to point this out, because, in principle, I like the image very much. But then, of course, it is the author‘s vision that counts.

Kind regards

What is your idea about more subdued. I used Lightroom and cranked up contrast and clarity.

No offence taken, but curious about alternative steps.

These days I personally (but that’s only me) tend to use the ‚clarity‘ slider rather more sparingly, because imho there is a bit of a slippery slope towards an artificial look that it may induce. At first, I was quite exhilarated by this feature, even more so in its more finely tuned implementation (‚structure‘) in SilverEfex, however I lately have reverted my preferences and retraced my steps a bit. One can easily achieve a „wow“ effect on first impression, however, if one comes back to an image a few days or weeks later, the effect may have become quite stale.

Maybe, furthermore, instead of using global contrast in huge quantity, adjusting black and white clipping boundaries could perhaps retain more greyscales inbetween. Clarity also tends to kill fine greyscale transitions.

As an alternative, you could experiment with tweaking the contrast curve directly, which takes some getting used to, however. LR has the rather elegant option of accompanying the curve with four sliders visible below the curve. You can fine-tune the area of application for these sliders by adjusting the corresponding boundaries below the X-axis of the curve (narrowing or expanding the scope of e.g. ‚low midtones‘ on which the appropriate slider will take its effect). Hope this makes sense without a screenshot, I am currently typing from my mobile.

But then, I am neither a pro nor an accomplished photog, thus by now I regret a little bit having infringed upon your ideas of postprocessing workflow. If, however, this shall give you any suggestions to fruitfully further explore the boundless expanse of visualization, I will be reconciled with myself.

Kind regards

Thanks again. Will try out your suggestions. Remark about the clouds: they were very dark as a storm was coming. The pictures is more moderate than the real life scene.

Wow.

(Non-ironic wow, this sky is spectacular )

However, if you compare your two pictures posted here, to me the above is more ‚credible‘ photographically.

Kind regards
