Hi Brock..

Needs more contrast without loosing detail.  Try lifting your shadows, a touch. And brighten you highlights until it's just contained.

Everything looks grey in your image...as do a lot of novice B&W workers...and what i did in my early years.

White paint on "free firewood" should be white..close to "paper white"

You could make this a pretty good image with some work...might try dodging the drive to get some streaks.

With all B&W I aim for paper whites and sooty blacks...where they should be.

I suppose a criticism ...but trying to be helpful.

Funny you should bring those points up...after posting the image I wasn't happy. But deleting and replacing with a new image always gets me in trouble....see below for a redone image.

Thanks for the comments...

You're getting close. Still not whites where they should be.

A little lift in the shadows, and add a bit more contrast in the sky.

I always like spot work in the dark (light) room.  Add light, or take away, for certain parts.

...keep going worth it.

Thanks again Dave, I figured out what my biggest problem with "seeing" the image was. I decided to perform last nights work on my laptop by the fire. This morning when I look at what I posted on my calibrated monitor they indeed look quite poor...so please slap me around if I try to do any half way serious work on the laptop monitor again! ;)  Regardless of the monitor issues, your comments are appreciated. Let's see how version 3 looks to you.

Now that looks excellent Brock. Just right to my eye, congratulations.

You've got nice open shadows without going too HDR (which can make an image look a bit cartoonish).

Nice dark sooty blacks, where they should be, and nice paper whites, again where they should be.

all best...
