B&W pictures on Leica M8

Been experimenting with shooting my M8 with jpeg only b&w in camera, something I've neglected initially but I have to say it's tons of fun!
I've set iso to 1200 and high contrast, noise is there but the jpeg compression will smooth it out and make it feel more organic, like film grain.
I now have my "monochrom" user preferences saved, so every time I want to shoot black and white in camera I just switch to that mode.
Camera slowing down a little during saving is not a noticeable issue, but 3mb files really felt a bit too small, reason why initially I ditched this option.
First off, it turns out that the small size is mostly due to jpeg being optimized for monochromatic data, I thought I was just loosing mostly pixel sharpness, but it's more to do with loosing channels than anything else.
Technicalities aside, the other day I went back to some of my B&W tri-x photos, and they were dusty, noisy, not really sharp, beautiful (to me, of course ; ), no idea why I kept asking more from my digital black and white workflow.

been out and about shooting b&w jpeg in camera again, loving it, now curious to try printing some of them to see if I see any jpeg artifact.

I doubt that the OoC Fine JPEGs are condensed enough for artifacts to be a significant problem. In my opinion DNGs are most useful for exposure correction and special effects. I have not found that my DNGs converted to JPEGs are in any way superior to correctly exposed  OoC JPEGs.

I find the M8 compression a bit too blocky compared to more modern cameras, of course, but yes it does the job just fine.
I don't find much need for color jpegs but for black and white it's very nice, I set it to jpeg-only and that's the only way I can stick to a solid day of b&w shooting without risks of changing my mind during post process.

I had a day at the Black Country Living Museum yesterday and took the M8 and Voigtlander 35mm color skopar with me, here’s some images showing why I won’t part with this camera. All JPEG mono straight from camera without any post processing. The little Voigtlander 35mm is a fantastic lens for the money.

Please comment and don’t worry about anything negative as I won’t be offended.

I love my M8. In some ways, the black and white images it produces are better than my M-P (240). If only it didn't have the crop factor...

For some reason, the crop factor on the APS-h sensor never bothered me. I think it's because I  have Pentax APS-c kits as well as the new APS-c Leica CL and have balanced the slight uptick the 1.3x/1.5x factors into my photo sessions. I like it because a 90mm Leitz prime lens on my M8.2 is actually a 118mm telephoto, while a 35mm is a 46mm and my Voigtlander 40 is actually a 52. That turns my 25mm f/4 into a 34mm and all the main focal points for me are covered regardless. I never understood why FF (film 35mm equivalent) is the standard. There is no standard in the digital age, though it can be confusing due to the expectations of the focal lengths of the lenses (compensation for the 1.3x/1.5x factor is a must for sure), but I guess I've adapted to the crop sensors.

Valdormar, welcome.

👌 Very nice those two pictures.

Almost like 4"x5" film portrait 😇 in this "big format rendering".

When I read that was from JPEG in M8 b&w, hard to believe this quality in .jpeg direct from camera.

Some years ago, I used this setting to discover b&w from M8, before Monochrom was launching, but I was ennoyed by the long processing time, so didn't use it much.

If I remember well, those .jpeg images were great.
