Monochrom Soft Release

Hi there,

I read somewhere that the Monochrom requires a different size for it's soft release button. On eBay I found a few cheap ones that are advertised as Leica, Fuji, etc. Soft Release buttons.

Does anyone know the specific kind of button that the MM requires and if I can find it on eBay ?

Thanks

I just tried an old cable release on a Fujica ST801, an X100T, an M6 and MM246 - all the threads seemed the same as far as I could see.

Leica's technical data for the M246 says 'standard thread for cable release integrated'.

Strange, I thought I read somewhere it would be different. But thanks for clarifying !

Probably on the Match Technical website?

"Leica Monochrom and Leica ME cameras require a shorter version of our soft release as the shutter button on these new cameras differs in its design when compared to the M9, M8 and older M cameras. Our soft release design is being updated to reflect this shorter thread found on the Leica ME and Leica Monochrom. Please indicate your camera model when ordering and we will be pleased to accomodate your request"

I have one of theirs for my MM1, only indicated as "Leica" on the box, and it does sit more flush than my Leica soft release. Beyond that, I can't really say why.

Beware, I had a soft release on my M9 based Monochrom and nearly ended up sending it back to Germany because I couldn't get the half press to work on the shutter in order to set an automatic aperture an then re-compose. I mentioned this "problem" during a Leica forum meeting in Bristol and Robert Parker suggested I take the soft release off. Removed it and everything worked perfectly.

Can't think why I never thought to try it without the soft release but then again you know what they say about the obvious.

Cheers, Tom

Basically, the M9/MM and older use the same threads. The M type 240 and M type 246 use a different thread. This is true for shutter release cables and soft release. Only very few will work on both. The specs are similar but subtilely different, and it's in the difference that's the rub.

I have no soft release that will work on both but have one shutter cable that does. Yes it does stick out a bit on the newer M type 240/246.

I just started using soft releases.  Love them!  Especially the concave wood designs.  Have had good luck with Artisan bought thru Leica Miami store.  Be sure to not miss the little rubber caskets that hold it in place.  They should be tucked away in the little box somewhere.  I nearly missed seeing them.

Bit late to the party but I've swapped over the ones I have on my M240 and MM-Mk1 and they both fit. I actually bought them via eBay for a couple of quid for my Fuji X100s but can't remember who from. Seems a bit hit or miss.

OK.  I now have three.  A wood Artisan Obscura, Match Technical, and Abrahamsson.  Have to say, like the Abrahamsson the most as far as how it behaves.  Nice fit on the M246.

So has anyone noticed the claims to gain 1 to 1.5 stops?

I tried one for a short while and discovered I had reeled off 100+ shots in my bag because I forgot to turn the camera off.

Can't say for certain how many stops but it certainly helps to provide a more controlled release, similar to how I would describe releasing a trigger off a gun - not snatching but to provide a deliberate control actuation.
