Popular Post Sam Posted January 19, 2016 Popular Post Share #1 Posted January 19, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm a hand engraver by profession, so I set out to engrave the top plate on my M240, and here's the result. I've always liked the engraving on Leica top plates and just had to give it a go. Welcome, dear visitor! jmahto Posted January 19, 2016 Share #4 Posted January 19, 2016 (edited) I am wondering whether the top plate can be replaced easily. If yes, then I can use personalized top plate for my usage and replace the original one if planning to sell at later date. Really great job on engraving btw. Can't believe it is done by hand. jaapv Posted January 19, 2016 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2016 No, it is not hard to replace. Just four screws from the bottom of the camera and disconnect one flex cable.

Sam Posted January 20, 2016 Author Share #11 Posted January 20, 2016 Thank you all It's too risky to do as a side business. There's no way to fix a slip when you're engraving through black paint, and it takes so long it would cost too much. The right person with a pantograph could probably do it.
bocaburger Posted January 23, 2016 Share #12 Posted January 23, 2016 If that was done freehand without pantograph, it is truly amazing. I have a very steady hand but even if I was following a stencil and tape lines I doubt I could get that kind of a machined look, especially where depth is concerned. Kudos! Yes, it's done freehand under stereo microscope. I made a special rounded graver of the appropriate size to replicate a machine made cut. I used Adobe Illustrator and traced the lettering from a high resolution photo of an engraved Leica top plate. I printed it on a transparency sheet and transferred it to my camera. From that point it was meticulous hand cutting of each letter, being extremely careful not to damage the surrounding black paint as there's no way to repair it. plo Posted April 15, 2019 Share #20 Posted April 15, 2019 I have checked the approx. quote from the local Leica Sore in Hong Kong, engraving of the top plate is quite expensive in the range of USD640 - 770, and takes about 4 months.
