m9photo Posted December 20, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 20, 2015 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm sorry if this kind off topic but I need your input, as I will be traveling for 2 weeks and in need of light laptop. I have a 15 MacBook pro but it's kind of heavy so I need something lighter to carry around. Most likely will use light room for processing, so do you think i5 should be better? Or i7? Also memory 4gb or 8gb? Thanks in advance! Edited December 20, 2015 by m9photo

stuny Posted December 21, 2015 Share #3 Posted December 21, 2015 Generally speaking, the greater the processing power and the greater the machine memory, the better.
jaapv Posted December 21, 2015 Share #4 Posted December 21, 2015 If you are only buying it for a two-week trip, why not get a second hand one? I have a 2011 11", 1.6 GHz Intel, 4 GB RAM, and it handles LR with ease, the screen is more than adequate for editing on fly, and I use a light external hard drive. mca Posted December 21, 2015 Share #5 Posted December 21, 2015 I second the opinion on buying a used one for the trip. On the other hand if you do want to have a second laptop for portability and travel, I would rather go with the 12" Macbook which is smaller than the air and has a much better screen (retina) than the Air line (non retina). As for memory, 8GB and 256GB would be my choice if you want to deal with raws and big files in general.
m9photo Posted December 21, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted December 21, 2015 Yes, I was thinking a second hand one. I'm narrowing down either 2013/14 model.
hcbrelb Posted December 21, 2015 Share #7 Posted December 21, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) FWIW I would certainly go for 8GB RAM, and if funds allowed probably go for the i7 - more for the "generation" than the raw clock speed. Yes, I was aware of that, my browser acting up, I accidentally hit the submit button twice. Please delete the other duplicate thread.

Yes, I've decided to get the i7 model with 1.7ghz/8gbRAM/512gbHD. I think I got a good deal for $600.
tobey bilek Posted December 28, 2015 Share #11 Posted December 28, 2015 You did. RAM is only important if you fill the hard drive so there is not enough storage for computations. Mine is i5 with 8 gb. All I need for off site work.
prk60091 Posted December 30, 2015 Share #12 Posted December 30, 2015 (edited) in any computer i would go with as much RAM as possible the fastest processor you can afford and most importantly a SSD over a HDD. pico Posted December 30, 2015 Share #13 Posted December 30, 2015 If you use Photoshop then it is best to have three SD or hard drives and use the two other than the system drive for its scratch files. Plenty of RAM is good but I have never seen Photoshop hit the drives when I had 16gb of RAM. See, Photoshop has its own swapping and ignores the OS scheme.
