3rd party lens performance on SL

Is early days I realise, but I wonder if we could please have a thread devoted to third party lens performance on the SL please.

 

In my case I would be interested in experiences with Zeiss F mount lenses (ZF/.2), particularly the 1.4/55 Otus, 1.4/85 Otus, and 2/135 Apo-Sonnar. But I also have a couple of C/Y lenses.

 

I'm sure there are others here interested, as well as those with Canon and Nikkor glass.

 

If I end up with and SL I will report first hand, but I haven't decided to pull the trigger yet (I had wished for higher resolution and IBIS), but there is a lot in this camera that appeals, including it looking like a good tool for some R glass I have. 

 

So, anyone with an SL and experience with third party lenses, please share your experiences. Thanks in advance.

I've been concentrating on R lenses to start. Ultimately, however, I have a bunch of Nikkors and a Nikon F to Leica M adapter that I can experiment with ...

I have the Jono summer 2015 kit (R 35-70/4; R 60/2.8 Macro; R 90/2 Asph) but I don't think there are many questions left about their strengths and weaknesses.  I plan to exercise the R 100/2.8 APO Macro and the M 18/3.8 asph.  I also have some 3rd party M lenses:  CV15 mark I, CV 21/3.5, Zeiss Biogon 21 (these two were 28 mm-eff on my M8), and a very contrasty old M 24/2.8 and M 135/3.4 APO Telyt. Also, the CV50/1.5. Does anyone at this site have the R 15/2.8 asph?  Anyway, I'll try to shoot 'em all, and share any interesting results.

I haven't delved into my M lenses at all yet. Actually, I'm most interested to do some shooting with the Summilux 35 v2 and the Hektor 135/4.5, but I think the 'Lux is going off to DAG to get six-bit-coded first. 

 

I would like to experiment with a Noctilux ... but I don't own one.

Hrm.... I hadn't thought about doing 3rd party for the SL. Interesting idea! My guess is that the Otus line are SO darn near perfect optically that it wouldn't matter what body you slap those babies on and they would perform admirably. I currently shoot the Otus's on the Sony A7Rii and it is just as remarkable as on it's native D810 - if not more so. Being adapted onto the A7Rii, we know that lens profiles and data are not being relayed to the body and thus software correction of files are most likely not being done at all - yet the results are as flawless as can be. There'd be no reason for me to assume otherwise on the SL Let's hope this is the case!

Performance of the SL with focal length about 24mm and up is unquestionable fantastic -  the usability is les so IMHO. 

 

The view finder is fantastic sure but it is not easy to MF using focus peaking for longer  lenses; Contrast focus, stopping lenses up and down to compensate, compose and find exact depth of focus while fiddling with buttons on the camera.

 

Not for action shooting but for tripod static shooting they will sing.

Hmm. I don't find I need focus peaking or even magnification assist for longer lenses. I pulled out the Nikon 180/2.8 AF-D yesterday. I can nail focus right on the money with a moving car coming towards me or driving away from me at 30-40 mph with no problems whatever, same for a child running down the sidewalk towards me. 

 

It does take some practice, but I've been practicing manual focus since 1969... 

 

The Nikon's internal focus is much faster than the Elmar-R 180/4, Elmarit-R 180/2.8, or Telyt-R 250/4 ... that's the limiting factor. On the R lenses, I can't turn the focusing ring fast enough in some circumstances.

Well, I've been saying this for ages.

I think that manual focusing with a good EVF is best done with practice . . rather than assistance - either form zooming in or from focus peaking. 

It's so seductive to turn on focus peaking . . or to zoom in - it's there, why not use it.

 

But I'm quite happy focusing on the screen on all of my lenses - especially with the splendid EVF on the SL

 

Throw away that crutch!

Amen, Brother Jono! ;-) That said: With wide lenses in particular, magnification is very handy to nail critical focus, if that's important. Peaking is a great "get roughly in the ballpark" tool.

Well, my opinion differs from yours. I find it much more difficult to obtain precise control over the exact plane of sharpness and the depth of the focused field with an optical viewfinder than with a high-resolution EVF. I can achieve it with either, but the EVF's constant brightness and versatility with focusing aids makes it much easier, regardless of the use of auto-diaphragm or not. 

 

It's ok to disagree. 

 

IMO, the larger reason to implement auto-aperture-stop-down is to extend the metering range of the camera system.

He he, my bad again

 

I was not comparing it to an OVF of a DSLR and using MF.

 

I was thinking of using a dedicated AFS lens meant for the job - not sticking a 3rd party lens on the SL as suggested in the Subject field.

 

Newer mind I think everybody got it now!

 

By all means use your M, R and whatever lenses on the SL it's loads of fun! Highly recommended! but do prepared to slow down things compared to a Pro DSLR with native lenses

Thank you. What adapter(s) are you using to mount the Canon lenses? All of my R lenses are Leitaxed to Canon EF...around 15 in all, along with a full range of Canon/Zeiss lenses, so I am searching for an adequate solution.

Anyone tried the Novoflex adapters?  (Eg, for Nikon; I assume that Sony FE lenses won't mount as they will need electronics to work the diaphragm)

I have a Novoflex Contax CX/Y to Leica M. It is beautifully made and has no movement on the SL with the M to T adapter. The only downside is that it has no tripod support on it. When I first got it, Novoflex said they would be making a ring mounted tripod support in due course but they never have. My Contax lenses work very well on the SL although the 28-85 Vario Sonnar, even though excellent is a bit surplus to requirements now with the 24-90 in my possession. The 300/600/1200mm Tele Tessar modular kit, where I could never get really sharp shots with the M240 and either the 600 or 1200, now springs to life on the SL and produces very sharp images with only a touch of pincushion distortion and a tiny amount of CA, both easily correctable in Capture One or Photoshop.

They made the ASTAT-NEX and ASTAT-MFT tripod mounts for adapters to those mounts ... If the Contax CX/Y is the same diameter as one of them, it should interchange.

      In the last few weeks I've noticed an increase of fuzzy shots coming from my SL.
      I was mostly using M lenses adapted using the Leica M-L initially, shutter speeds were kept more than high enough. Focus was acheived using the peaking/zoom, which I've always had as a successful technique. So I thought initially it was me not paying attention to my camera skills etc. Then today, I was using a Panasonic 20-60mm and I changed the focus point to the single cross-hair and ensured I took at least two of every scene, and mostly this worked, with me taking the first shot then recomposing the focus point to get the second shot.
      There were still a few occasions where the fuzzy look was still present. I'm not sure what has changed or why the issues all of a sudden.
      The attached images show the fuzzy look (orange car - with M lens) and the hotrod with the Panasonic 20-60 - 100% zooms provided.
      I did a search and couldnt find any related issues, hence this post

      mein Name ist Chris, habe mich an anderer Stelle bereits vorgestellt.
      Zu Leica gekommen bin ich über die Leica Q, vorher hatte ich eine Fuji und davor eine Canon-Ausrüstung.
      Mittlerweile hat sich hier folgende Ausrüstung angesammelt, die ich nun gerne auf das Nötigste zusammen streichen möchte. Da ich mich überhaupt nicht entscheiden kann, suche ich neue Impulse. 
      Was fotografiere ich?
      - Natur, auch mal Makro (mit Q2 oder M-Zwischenring), Menschen, auch mal Street, Reise, Hunde, Autos, auch mal Portrait-Serien, Familien-Portraits. Selten Stativ aber gerne low light, nie Blitz
      Kameras in der Reihenfolge der häufigsten Verwendung:
      - SL mit M auf L-Adapter
      - M9 Monochrom (behalte ich auf jeden Fall, M10 brauche ich nicht, hatte ich bis vor Kurzem)
      - Q2 
      Objektive in der Reihenfolge der häufigsten Verwendung:
      - 50 mm Summilux Version I, 1966
      - 35 mm Summilux Version I, 1967 (Verwendung an der SL eingeschränkt... verstärkte Vignettierung)
      - 21 mm Voigtländer F1,4
      - 50 mm Summicron, 2000
      - 35 mm asph. Summicron 2002
      - 90 mm Elmarit F2,8 (gerne gezielt bei Portrait)
      Welche Begehrlichkeiten gibt es? 
      - SL2-S
      aber brauchen tue ich die nicht zwingend. Glaube nicht, das ich damit bessere Bilder mache. Es reizt gegenüber der SL der IBIS und das noch bessere Rauschverhalten sowie das viiiiel bessere Fokus-Peaking....  Da ich die Sl für 1500,- Euro gekauft habe, würde ich seeehr viel für diese Reize zahlen.
      Hat jemand spontan einen Impuls, Ideen, die mit weniger Objektiven. Eine Überlegung war schon mal auf neuere Summiluxe umzustellen und dafür aller 35er und 50 er zu veräußern. Sind die neueren Summiluxe bei F2 oder F2,8 so scharf wie die Summicrone? Die älteren sind das erst bei F4 und dass ist mir dann schon zu wenig Licht und/oder Freistellung.

      I recently was thrown off when shooting a location portrait with the sun behind my subject. The flare in the SL viewfinder made critical focusing or even viewing impossible. Shooting into the sun with its rim light effect on the hair is one of my go-to tricks in bright sunlight. It’s never been an issue with DSLRs. I’m thinking that because light is directly hitting the sensor in a mirrorless camera, this is an insurmountable problem. Has anyone experienced this?

      This is my first review here so I am not used to the technicalities of posting, please forgive me if I readjust things after I post.

      1. none of the lens makers / converters have been involved in these tests and I have personally purchased all 3 lenses, none of them have been provided.

      3. all opinions expressed here are my own and, just like with anything in life (especially photography equipment!), you may have a different one.
      A few bullet points about the tests:
      - done on my Leica M-P typ 240
      - done on a tripod with a 2 second timer to hopefully dampen most vibrations
      - no filters or hoods were used and lenses were extremely clean
      - captured at M-P's base ISO: 200 (with the exception of a few frames captured at 1.2 and 1.4 because 1/4000 was too slow to keep equal exposures so I set the ISO to PULL 100)
      - exposure was manual and the exposure time was adjusted accordingly with every aperture change (generally 2/3 stop) in order to hopefully maintain an even exposure between the samples
      - white balance was on AUTO
      - all focus was EXTREMELY CAREFULLY done using LIVE VIEW at f/2 for each lens, using both the focus peaking and my own eyes to make sure I get the best possible focus
      - focus was redone with every lens change
      - the 40mm was repositioned so that the main subject filled roughly the same size in the photos (as much as possible, the infinity tests obviously show the difference in focal length)
      - most tests were taken all all apertures but since this ended up requiring so much work I only included up to f/8, to be honest I don't think anything past that is relevant
      - all samples processed in Capture 1 PRO with the default output sharpening for screen (any image processor will apply some sort of sharpening from DNG to JPG)
      - I am sharing a Google Drive folder with all DNGs, JPGs, comparisons and misc images, all full size. Please check them out and use them for free, a credit would be nice if you end up posting them.

      A morsel of history: if you're reading this you most likely know what this lens is, otherwise this info can be easily found online.
      The G35/2 is supposed to be the "lesser performer" of the Contax G suite, the internet is funny like that, some person deemed it once as not being as stellar as the G45/2 (which is whispered to be one of the best lenses in 35mm photography history) and the internet has taken that and transformed it into "not a good lens" kind of rumour. I am here to prove otherwise.
      Here's a G35 / G45 specs comparison:

This 35 together with the Hologon 16mm are the only ones I do not own in G mount. I have shot all the other ones (21/2.8, 28/2.8, 45/2, 90/2.8) on my Contax G2 and adapted on my Sony A7R3 with a cheap Ulata adapter. They are sharp, very sharp wide open. And so light.
      Build quality: without further ado, I think FUNLEADER and Mr. Ding have done an amazing job here: the conversion is incredible, so tiny and lovely, with a great weight and feel. The focus action is nice and smooth and the little focus tab suits the lens. The black paint version is really beautiful, I have always been a black paint / lacquer fan, hence my M-P. This version will get patina with use (unless you're Lenny Kravitz and give it a good rub to look well used). The "gold" version has lovely sharp black engravings and a black focus tab. The focus tabs are really nice, placed at the perfect position where, when pointed straight downwards, the lenses focus at 4 feet / 1.2 meters. I also purchased a "gold" helicoid as I am planning to do a conversion myself. The "gold" helicoid feels like brass and it's a bit of a fingerprint magnet.
      The helicoid has "MR. DING" engraved on the mount. Pretty cool. I did a bit of digging and "Mr. Ding" is their master craftsman, maybe having been part of MGR Production. They are also behind the Bresson Viewfinder magnifier, which I happen to have on my M-P and love.
      I would love to find out more about Mr. Ding, if anyone has info please do share.

The lens did have a plastic ring glued on the front, on top of the original Carl Zeiss from markings, but I removed it easily and left no marks. Sorry Mr. Ding, I prefer the original Carl Zeiss engravings.
      The original lens hood of the G35 / G45 fits nicely, but I have the champagne version and I personally don't think it works with either the black or the gold version. I might spray paint it with a glossy enamel.
      Honestly, it looks amazing on the M-P. It is a gem of a little lens and a great performer.
      Customer service: excellent, very responsive, I had quite a few questions for them and they replied very quickly.
      Packing: excellent, pragmatic, not fancy.
      Shipping: wowsers, the lens was in my hand in Vancouver BC Canada in 6 days, dayum!
       
      PART 2 / 5: colour, focal length, sharpness close and mid distance
      Two notes about colour and focal length:
      - colour - the G35/2 renders the most accurate and neutral colours, next is the VM 40/1.2, while the 7artisans 35/1.4 M renders quite warm
      - focal length - the G35/2 is a little wider than the 7artisans 35/1.4 M, I wonder what their real focal lengths are. Please do share if you happen to know.
      Sharpness: the G35/2 is very sharp wide open, it nearly matches the VM 40/1.2 at f2, actually honestly we are splitting hairs between the G35/2 and VM 40/1.2. Keep in mind that the VM starts at 1.2, so from a lens design pov it has a lot of room to be sharp at f2. It's quite a feat how consistent the G35/2 is all the way up to the widest apertures. The G35/2 is sharper than the 7artisans 35/1.4 M at every aperture. I was surprised as well. In all honestly, I really love the 7artisans lens, it has a really nice 3d pop and the built is absolutely amazing.
      Check out these 100%s of this starling at f2! I used live view, there's no way to nail that in the viewfinder patch, I also took a bunch of shots and these were the best 4, maybe out of 12 or so.

      Focus shift: I did not test for it, but from my walks it seems to be fine.

      CONCLUSION:
      The Carl Zeiss Contax G Planar 35mm f/2 is a gem. Coming from great heritage, it is now encased in an amazing conversion from FUNLEADER for our Leicas. The G35/2 is an honest lens, you won't find clinical sharpness here, but since you're reading this you're probably not looking for that, but for the resurrection of a highly underrated Carl Zeiss optic. The G35/2 renders the world gently with neutral colour rendition, pleasant bokeh and a sprinkle of pop. The tiny form has a great weight and feel and it simply looks incredible on a Leica. The black paint version is shiny and will brass while the "gold" version has lovely sharp black engravings (bit of a fingerprint magnet though). I honestly look at my camera sitting on my desk now and hear the whispers: "take me out and make photographs". Well done FUNLEADER and Mr. Ding, hat's off to you.
      Just like the original little piece of history it now protects and focuses, the FUNLEADER conversion will also be remembered as a gem amongst the connoisseurs.
