After months of agonizing, I traded my beloved Monochrom for a very clean used SL. Here's one of my first test shots. This is looking out my window. Somehow the rainbows always seen to end over the carpet merchant's warehouse. SL with 75 Apo Summicron.

Another one from the walk. I may need to use a tripod to get a softer water rendition. SL/75

SL with 105-280mm f/4.2 Vario-Elmar-R + APO-Extender-R 1.4X . . .

This somewhat heavy setup seems to have replaced my Lumix 70-200mm f/4 + 2X for shooting at ~400mm, as Panasonic's 2X TC just doesn't pair well with the otherwise spectacular, fast-focusing lens.

Wonder if the Lumix S teleconverters will work on the upcoming Sigma 100-400? 🤔

Nice shot with a great lens. I sold mine when I bough the VE90-280mm SL. I still bemoan the fact that we don't have a Leica teleconverter in L mount.

Sigma's releasing its own 1.4x & 2X  teleconverters in L mount , which are specifically designed to work with the new L mount Sigma lenses. Anything else would be a compromise, so I wouldn't bother with the Panasonic teleconverters.

I was half-kidding about the Panasonic teleconverters being compatible with the Sigma lens, as Sigma has already had a couple of compatibility issues with other L-mount stuff.   I do hold out hope, though, that Panasonic will eventually bring to the market a prime telephoto that will work with their 2X converter better than the 70-200 f/4 does.

Sigma . . . given my experience with their DSLR 100-400 lenses (I know....a different optical formula) I will wait and see.  Resolution and fine detail rendering on the older lenses were very good to excellent, but even wide open at f/6.3, light transmission was--anecdotally--more like f/8-f/9, pretty much where the Panasonic + 2X leaves me.

Anyway, one more with the R 105-280mm + APO-Extender-R 1.4X . . .

SL with Lumix 70-200mm f/4 + 2X, sorely lacking on a bird whose feathers even inexpensive consumer zooms render with fine details . . .

I've been working through an at-home series during these weird times of social distancing. I'm on day 78 (I think) of an image a day. Has started to be a challenge with the space smaller and smaller. Didn't hit my daily goal until last night at almost midnight.  The full series is at IG @mikehuff909 if interested.  It has been an interesting project to say the least. A couple decent images, and a bunch of this and that.

Day 77

SL with Lumix 70-200mm f/4 + 1.4X . . .

Very capable alone or with the 1.4X TC, the lens becomes mediocre with the 2X TC attached.  Worse, its field of view falls somewhere between that of the 105-280mm + 1.4X (392mm) and the 180mm Elmarit-R + 2X (360mm), meaning it's less than the 400mm focal length touted by Panasonic. It is hereby officially relieved of birding duties... 🙃  Even the venerable R 80-200mm f/4 paired with the APO-Extender-R 2X outshines the Lumix combo.

Thanks for the hands-up (or down, possibly... 😉). Have you experience with the much-acclaimed Leica 280mm f4 APO R? Just curious...

I owned one for several years. By itself on M240 or SL, and precisely focused, it could render bird feathers with more detail and acuity than any other lens I've used.  But when I added either APO-Extender-R, it seemed to lose some of its magic. On other camera bodies, I encountered various anomalies and issues.

I'm probably the only person I know who prefers the 105-280mm f/4.2 Vario to the 280mm f/4 APO.  In spite of its slightly heavier weight, I find it easier to handle in the field.  And I actually prefer its "rounded" sharpness (for lack of a technical term) over the brittle sharpness of the 280 APO.

Anyway, a pleasant blast from the past:  SL with 280mm f/4 APO-Telyt-R . . .

Rufous Whistler . . .
