How to upload images: Prepare the image as follows: 1.   The image should be sRGB and 8-bits 2.   Reduce the size to 2048 pixels on the longest side. (smaller sizes can be set, but are not recommended) 3.   Sharpen properly for screen. 4.   Save as JPG to your desktop, reducing JPG quality to produce 2000 kB (5000 kB for sponsoring members). 5.   In Lightroom these parameters should be set in the Export dialog. 6.   In the Forum posting or editing box, click “choose Fil

On our drive up from Dunedin yesterday we stopped at Oamaru. What a lovely town with a historic Victorian area! And the best part is we unintentionally stumbled upon Steampunk HQ - just wow! We were only there to get a quick coffee but will definitely go back and spend much more time soon.

I was extremely lucky to have experienced the Northern Lights. They were dancing all around us. Moonlight made it that much more spectacular, as the foreground was quite well lit. Moon was waxing gibbous 72% and had no significant effect on viewing Northern Lights.

😂I start with 30sec ISO 3200 f4, irrespective of the focal length. From there I adjust aperture, ISO, and/or shutter speed accordingly, depending on the ambient moonlight, dof, etc. I find that 500 or 600 or other rules don't have a significant impact on my kind of use of the pictures. There may be small trails, but are insignificant - maybe 2-3 pixels, and doesn't impact my viewing, unless it will be enlarged.

🤣 thank you. Although I did consider the 500 rule as a starting point, I ended up shooting manually adjusting parameters. So yes fixed focal length to 35mm, f=4.5 and tried at ISO 50 and the second image ISO 3200. 

I thought much about time of day and where Milky Way would be and concluded after the shot the Milky Way wasn’t there at all, otherwise I’m sure a Leica gear would have made the image for me 😂

Yes, Leica gear is capable of capturing the Milky Way. What was the shutter speed? And, I would have preferred to shoot at 16mm as well.. wider the better. Southern hemisphere should give you ample opportunity to capture the Milky Way through the year, unlike the Northern hemisphere. 
Try to shoot just after sunset.. around south west direction.. and wait to see 2-3 stars in the sky, and start shooting... you could also use apps such as stellarium or photopils to see where and what time it is rising.
