New Leica M in September 2016? The speculations.

Oh? I thought one would present itself this year , right after or on the Photokina?  You know "10 year digital Leica camera" is a good reason and there are some other signs ( but not really facts- everybody is keeping his mouth shut, or doesn't belong to it's inner circle-  just like: " After the Photokine it will be an adventure..." )

I was hoping new M will come this year, but my trusty source claim no new M this year. Leica probably struggle to implement the new breakthrough feature into the new M, but hopefully my source wrong.

There will surely be some limited edition 10th Anniversary Special to celebrate 10 glorious years of Leica Digital M while quietly drawing a veil over the less happy moments...

Let me count the ways... (apologies to EBB)

-  M8 UV Light Pollution

-  Free Filter giveaway

-  M8 Image ghosting recall

-  30% off a lens to say sorry

-  M8 Light at the sensor edge green streaking

-  "Upgradeable Forever"

-  M9 Sensor Corrosion

-  Early M240 Recall

-  Firmware problems never fixed

-  Exhausted supplies of M8 LCD screens

There's probably more I can't remember...

An unusually short and specific list of SD cards that were fully compatible with the M9.

Don't forget the M 240 which gives me already 3 years of sheer pleasure. ( Did I forget the recall? )

I was hoping new M will come this year, but my trusty source claim no new M this year [...]

My ones tell the contrary but i have no evidence at all. When i hear Leica gurus repeating that there will be no new M at photokina in september, i translate that it will be announced in 2016 before or after photokina, but it's just me. Now i'm less interested by when than by what will be announced. A M240-like body with accessory EVF or an hybrid body? In the latter case i could well keep my M240 but i would be curious to see this hybrid thing if any.

Shall I change the title of the thread to 2017? or 2018?

Yes you can change the title but wait until the 15th of  October, you never know... ;)

My next digital M will be a slimmer (M6 size) body with a 28MP sensor, no screen (like the MD) and further viewfinder improvements ( ideally a glass solution with choice so you could have 21-50 )

I'd like the sensor to have colours nearer the 9 too

It's like buying a lottery ticket most of the value is the dream of what you might buy

I can see my new camera now ....

Okay here it is in my mind....

Leica dealers take orders and you spec your camera, three or so basic platforms (Full functionality vide etc, slimmed down, purist) you choose B&W or colour and even the possibility of different sensors (Perhaps there is a lower resolution higher dynamic range option, so high dynamic range 20MP, or 35MP slightly less DR)

They have basic configurations built for stock but build the other to order

You can have a personal camera built for you and this is part of the Leica specialty you pay for what you want and get. This has to be the way to go for Leica, they can still build one off limited editions, and build stock in standard configurations. It's more than growing a la carte as this is trim based only

The unfortunate consequence following an announcement of a new Leica M (or non-M) camera is that the usual armchair naysayers will criticise it - probably unfairly. Those of us who recall previous criticisms could even predict what they will write. And their remarks will be unmoderated.

The most important change would be to get back to the slim, light, and easily handled form factor of the film M cameras.

Sure, there might be many small improvements on the current digital Ms, but if Leica wants to compete with Nikon and Canon they can do it with the SL. A quality digital camera small and light enough to be carried always, and as suitable for street photography and photojournalism as a film M, would mark a return to Leica's traditional competitive advantage.
