These oaks (yes, Quercus robur) may be over 500 years old. The stand on a riverdune in a meander of the Ems in Germany - a nature preserve since 1937. The dunes have been grazed for centuries by the local farmer community. They made regulations to prevent overgrazing. The stems of the oaks used to be harvested regularly (coppice). The broad bottom is the part of the tree that always remained intact. The tree with the six stems also has such a broad bottom. In time it got covered by windblown sand.

These two friendly buggers were following me all around. Harassing me when i crouched to take a picture, by pulling at my hair and backpack. Too young and big for comfort.
