Designed by German architects, the neo-renaissance building was a gift to Turkey from Kaiser Wilhelm II. Opened by Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II in 1908, it served as a major train hub for the Asiatic side of Istanbul and points east. It was closed to rail traffic in 2013 to make way for a high speed rail and undersea tunnel project. In 2014 the Turkish government announced plans to modernize the facility and re-use it as a rail terminus. There is some doubt as to whether this will actually happen. Leica C. Welcome, dear visitor! I can't believe I failed to see this in Istanbul. Stu, I took this shot from the Besiktas-Kadikoy ferry. The terminal is a short walk from Kadikoy if you ever want to explore.
