dleibow Posted January 1, 2016 Share #2 Posted January 1, 2016 I would like to comment on the remarks about the Leica SL Type 601 as an adequate replacement for a non-existent digital R reflex. The author makes this comment: "Leica promised to provide a proper replacement for R lenses, the Leica SL clearly is that replacement, whether intentionally or not." The SL is absolutely not an appropriate or adequate replacement for a digital R. The major problem is [that to the best of my understanding] the lens adapters will not provide an automatic diaphragm. That means we are working with a manual diaphragm on a reflex camera, that is no fun at all. It is just like using an M lens on a current Sony body: wonderful lens, manual diaphragm. That is not in any way an adequate replacement for an SLR. While I love Leica, they need to get their act together or they will end up being a very expensive collectible (more so than is already the case.) AlanJW Posted January 4, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted January 4, 2016 Thank you for your comment. I think you are correct on the issue of auto diaphragm and the SL not being a DSLR. Nevertheless, even if it is not a true digital R (a path Leica abandoned, other than the DMR back) it is the closest Leica has come and it is a better way to use R lenses than a mechanical Visoflex or on a M(240) with adapter and EVF. I tried the EVF route and was not happy. I have a SL on order and will mainly use it with M lenses, which means no AF and no auto diaphragm either. And at least now there will be native autofocus and autodiaphragm Leica lenses too if you want to go that route. I know this is small consolation for those who wanted a digital R but I do think the review took a lot of work and was well done, so perhaps we can cut some slack for the reviewer.
