IWC Doppel Posted August 5, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I am new to the world of the monochrom and thoroughly enjoying it. I know my lenses well on the M9, but finding that some of the older lenses are lovelier (As already mentioned) on the MM I really like my 35mm Summaron F2.8 on the MM and don't have any others of that era (I am a Mandler fan really). Anything I might consider (perhaps an early 50mm Summicron ?)
Advertisement Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Hi IWC Doppel, Take a look here Older lenses for the Monochrom (CCD). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Alberti Posted August 5, 2015 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2015 Same to me, an MM newbie. I am astonished by my 35 Summicron (II), although it is soft wide open and you can see it.
Jay B Posted August 6, 2015 Share #3 Posted August 6, 2015 I really like the look of the Canon LTM 50's on the MM, and most are a bargain price. The 1.4 is an excellent lens, and the 1.2 is even better. I need to use it more. BerndReini Posted August 9, 2015 Share #4 Posted August 9, 2015 50mm summicron rigid, 35mm summicron V.4, obviously your 35mm AA is a dream wide open, 75mm summilux, and Noctilux f1 would be some of my suggestions. None of them cheap, I'm afraid.
fiftyonepointsix Posted August 9, 2015 Share #5 Posted August 9, 2015 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/193239-old-lenses-on-the-monochrom-post-examples-here/ The above thread has many great examples. The only lens that I've tried and did not like - the 9cm F4 uncoated Elmar. Never tried the Summar. Uncoated Sonnar- I use often. Lenses that are low contrast with veiling flare tend to be too flat on the M Monochrom. For relatively inexpensive lens- the Nikkor-HC 5cm f2 is one of my favorites, https://www.flickr.com/photos/90768661@N02/sets/72157646967728723 And for very inexpensive, the Jupiter-8 https://www.flickr.com/photos/90768661@N02/sets/72157651851966083 Some work required to optimize for Leica. BerndReini Posted August 13, 2015 Share #7 Posted August 13, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) People love the 50mm rigid on the MM. I have to admit that I haven't really shot my MM much with the Rigid. I just got the 50 Apo and it has been my go-to-50. I originally bought a Rigid to match my silver M7. A shallow reason, but hey, why not? But I know that it is a favorite on the MM. The only drawback is the minimum focus distance.
Joakim Posted August 14, 2015 Share #8 Posted August 14, 2015 I have the newer Monochrom and one of my favorites is the Voigtländer 35/2.5 Classic Color-Skopar and the Canon 50/1.4 LTM is also good. (Not sure if it is any practical difference between the old and new Monochrom when it comes to selecting lenses)
asiafish Posted August 16, 2015 Share #9 Posted August 16, 2015 Look for an old (or even the modern) Zeiss 50 Sonnar. They are magic on the Monochrom (and damn nice on the M9 as well). Also the Russian "Jupiter 3" is just a knock-off of the Sonnar, and equally excellent on the Monochrom. ldhrads Posted August 17, 2015 Share #10 Posted August 17, 2015 Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! I use a 1954 Summarit 50/1.5 on my MM almost exclusively. I found it on that auction site a while back and was very disappointed as it was H A Z Y. A week visit to Sherry Krauter and it's a brand new lens and it's amazing. I really like the way it draws on my MM. Here's a shot with it, the metadata will say Tri-Elmar, but it's not. fiftyonepointsix Posted August 17, 2015 Share #11 Posted August 17, 2015 The 5cm F1.5 Xenon also does quite well on the M Monochrom: once it is cleaned of haze. A friend posted tips on disassembling it, I was able to clean this one up myself. Different construction from the Summarit. I personally believe the Xenon is optimized for F1.5 and close-up; the Five Summarits that I shot with were optimized for F2.8. Leica 5cm F1.5 Xenon by fiftyonepointsix, on Flickr Leitz Xenon 5cm F1.5, wide-open, Orange filter. "Tiffen #611 Series VI Filter Adapter"- works on the Summarit and Xenon. Glad I had Two of them. BerndReini Posted August 18, 2015 Share #12 Posted August 18, 2015 That Xenon is beautiful. Does it contain radioactive glass?
Alberti Posted August 18, 2015 Share #13 Posted August 18, 2015 Paris, Place de Thorigny My old Summicron 35 is a stellar performer. I never liked it too much on the M8 for some reason.
fiftyonepointsix Posted August 18, 2015 Share #14 Posted August 18, 2015 That Xenon is beautiful. Does it contain radioactive glass? Thankyou- This lens was a pleasant surprise. No radioactive glass in the Xenon, (normal production) Summitar, or Summar. The 1st generation Collapsible Summicron uses Thoriated Glass. The prototypes were marked Summitar* and are very rare. The Xenon also renders beautifully in color, very muted colors like the original Kodachrome.
IWC Doppel Posted July 14, 2016 Author Share #15 Posted July 14, 2016 I've been looking for a pre ASPH 35mm Summilux but haven't find the right one yet Perhaps I should look out for a Jupiter or take a punt on something really old. I'm using the MM more and more I adore the Noctilux F1 on it but still fund it hard to take the summaron off. Still amazed these little gems aren't more sought after

Belle123 Posted July 15, 2016 Share #17 Posted July 15, 2016 Am using only older lenses now with mine. Specifically the Summicron 35mm and 50mm both v4, and Noctlux 1.0 v1. They just sing on the monochrome! Something about them I can't explain on this camera that is different than on a regular M. I won't even consider putting on any newer lenses anymore. Which is kind of a relief as no longer interested in purchasing any more lenses!
BerndReini Posted July 20, 2016 Share #18 Posted July 20, 2016 I've been looking for a pre ASPH 35mm Summilux but haven't find the right one yet Don't you own the 35lux AA? If so, don't bother. As a matter of fact, this should be the only 35mm lens you ever use on the MM. I know this is a bold statement, but it is the perfect combination of sharpness and wonderful bokeh and tonality. Playing with too many lenses distracts from making photographs. Welcome, dear visitor! Very good performance especially at smaller apertures, see this:http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/261480-harbour-tall-ship/?p=3060162 And more on my history.
