Close up filters on Leica T

Recommended Posts

I finally got myself a close up filter. I decide on the Canon 500D close up filter as I do a bit of close up photography on watches. Also I understand that the 500D is a double-element close up filter that claims a better image quality. The 500D is a +2 diopter close up filter. The filter is fitted on the 18-56mm lens.

Testing the filter....

With the filter on

18mm. Vignetting (?) at the edges. Apologies as I am not a technical person.

56mm

The filter (500D) was designed to be used with lens above 70mm, so I guess since the 56mm end is 84mm (35mm), it should be ok. Canon has another close up filter in the 250D, which is for lens below 70mm.

Oh, working distance is also reduced by about half (there about).

Will try out more and post after more testing.

But they ain't filters … they're 'supplementary close-up lenses'.

Save a few ££ €€ $$ by using Leitz Elpro c/u lenses … all are achromats ( doublet lenses - as are Marumi and the Canon 500D and 250D c/u lenses)

Elpro VII refers to Series VII thread which is 54mm
Elpro VI refers to Series VI which is 44mm

Elpro VIa and Elpro 1 are both 2.51 diopters
Elpro VIb and Elpro 2 are both 4.92 diopters
Elpro VIIa and Elpro 3 are both 1.66 diopters
Elpro VIIb and Elpro 4 are both 0.75 diopters

Elpro 1 and Elpro 2 have dual 44mm and 55mm threads

Elpro 3 has 55mm thread

Elpro 4 has 55mm thread

The most useful Elpro 2 (4.92 diopter) and Elpro 1 (2.51 diopter) can be sourced secondhand at reasonable prices - i've bought them for as little as £5 … but some of the Ebay sharks (one in particular in the UK)  try and sell them for over £50. Shop around and they're usually less than £30.

For the 18-56mm and 11-23mm T lenses you'll need a 52-55mm stepping ring … and for the 55-135mm T lens you'll need a 60-55mm stepping ring.

I use Elpro c/u lenses on my X Vario and results are just as good as when using Leitz/Leica macro lenses on my R9/DMR
