Leica Q battery

Hi,

The datat sheets state that the battery for the Q is BP-DC 12.

A search for that model shows that the battery for the V-LUX4 is the same model.

But is it really the same battery?

On B&H site there are two listings with same model name and specs:

1: BP-DC 12 for Leica Q that costs $190

Well, if it has the same Product code, at least the Leica batteries should be the same . But I guess very soon you can read a post of a forum member who tried the alternatives in his Q. I can only say that the battery in the Q is labelled 7.2v 1200 mAh.

I bought an extra battery for mine, which they said in the store was the same as in some other Leica camera (can't remember which one, but unfortunately not the M9/MM batteries which I already have a couple of).

In the video interview on Luminous Landscape about the Q Stefan Daniel confirms it is the same battery as used in other Leica cameras.

I've ordered the wasabi batteries, not a big risk for $30...

We'll see how they'll work when the Q arrives

David Farkas in his review states:

"The good news here is that the battery is the same BP-DC12 as the V-Lux (Typ 114) so they are readily available and relatively small."

I think the choice of the battery for the Q is far better than the one of the M240. I never had battery problems with the M9, but I can see that a somewhat larger battery like the Q has is a better choice. However with the M240 battery Leica went over the top - especially considering that the M of all digital cameras should have the lowest battery requirements not requiring any electricity until you take a picture.

Too bad it doesn't use M9 batteries.  I've got three, and they cost a pretty penny.

I think it's the same battery as the V-Lux. I charged my Q battery in my wife's V-Lux charger - it worked fine and the batteries look identical.

The battery for the Sigma DP Quattro series is also identical.

This is the Panasonic version for their DMC-FZ200 which is their version of the Vlux4. Same camera = same battery. B&H sells the Panasonic battery for 44.78.  The Panasonic works perfectly in my Q, in case you are looking toget a spare battery or 2

3 aspects:

- contractual - as per Leica's terms and conditions

- operational - as in technically all these batteries share the same interface: plus, minus, 7.2V

- how to prove - as in how is anyone every going to know that someone used a bogus battery (unless it is really obvious)

Agreed. The charger looks v. cheap... I'm not intending to

attach it to 240Vac mains just to the car's nominal 12Vdc

for emergency use out in the field - perhaps after running

out of charged up batteries. Quite likely never to be used.
