I hardly use my 50 lux ASPH and I am more a wide angle lens user, so is it better to sell the 50 lux or trade it in and pay the difference to get a 21mm lux ASPH???

Selling it yourself is always a better option if you have the time and patience for it. Trading it in would always incur a dealer percentage cut for the convenience of such transaction.

dealer gets both ends the spread -- he buys from you wholesale and sells you the new lens retail. is the spread too much? think of some percentage of it as the price for not having to deal with selling it yourself online. That's all

Like Steve and hiepphotog say, you just have to decide if "easy" is worth something.

 

At the shop, we generally give the following percentages of what we expect to sell an item for, "used retail market price":

 

50% for an outright purchase (seller leaves with a check and no new gear)

60% value as a trade-in towards other gear (and if your item is worth more than what your trade for, you get a check for the difference as well)

70% of the final selling price if consigned (payment only after we sell your item; we sell on consignment either in the shop, or through da Bay, depending on where you/we think it will do best in terms of speed or price.)

 

We may do better than those "base" rates - for either an item we think is in high demand and will sell fast, or for long-term customers. It's always a negotiation...especially on consignment (what asking price shall we set; what will you actually take?). We may go lower for items our experience tells us will likely require some additional investment in repairs (we offer a 6-month warranty on used equipment, so we may be on the hook if a problem develops).

 

Personally, when I was a "customer" and not a "salesperson", I almost always traded up rather than sold myself. Too much time, expense and hassle dealing with ads, postings, shipping, insurance, "buyers' remorse." But if you think you can make a clean, quick sale personally, you will get more cash value out of your item.

I wouldn't sell it on CheeseBay, though.  Their new terms make it possible for a buyer to demand and get a refund up to six months after the transaction.  It's part of their "Protect the buyer, screw the seller" program.  :rolleyes:

eBay has no current policy on this and if they do most state laws will negate it.

50 Summilux would be costly to replace if you sold it and then changed your mind. Is there a dealer who does commission sales near you? Trade-in against new, as noted above, is more expensive than selling first (lose c.20% of the reselling price) then buy from Leica specialist. You might even then haggle about what you will pay him!

Varies of course by dealer.  Popflash, for instance, returns 87% of selling price to customer if item sold in first two weeks; 80% thereafter.

Ok I'm thinking about starting a new service.  We all know what happens, you sell a Leica lens, regret it later, and end up buying it back for twice what you sold it for.  So here's how my service would save people a ton of money:  Instead of selling the lens, you send it to me. Take as long as you need to eventually decide you want it back, then you pay me just $200 and I send it back to you.
