profus Posted May 13, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 13, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I think I can recall somebody mentioned in another topic, that the new Monochrom ( Typ 246 ) is going to be cheaper than the old one? Well, that is clearly not the case here in Copenhagen, DK Official prices are announced ( two biggest danish retailers ): MM typ 246 7570,- € MM 7170,- € ( if you still can find it... ) What is the price in your countries? I am specially interested in EU prices - it hearts to hear about US ones ( can see BH photo sells it as preorder for 7450,- $ = 6625,- € ! ) Thank you all! Cheers Alex

2slo Posted May 13, 2015 Share #4 Posted May 13, 2015 (edited) In the UK the original MM is now advertised at £4999 (€7006 approx) whilst the new MM (246) is listed at £5750 (€8059 approx). That said, the original Monochrom is still listed by several retailers at £6200 (its usual list price in the UK) so, on that basis, the new version is cheaper. Possibly the discount is to try to sell the old stock as the new model is imminent. If you want to look at UK prices for new camera gear, including Leica, you will find this website useful: http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ Edited May 13, 2015 by 2slo

mmradman Posted May 13, 2015 Share #8 Posted May 13, 2015 You need to add tax on US prices if I'm not mistaken. True but you can, I believe, get away without paying sales tax if you order online from different state. Of course you would be responsible to declare to IRS which register businesses probably have to do, easier for private buyer not to? There was some noise a while back about California trying to enforce sales tax on online purchases from transactions outside the state. Perhaps someone from USA can explain. algrove Posted May 13, 2015 Share #9 Posted May 13, 2015 (edited) You need to add tax on US prices if I'm not mistaken. This is not true for all B&H purchases. If you take it off the B&H counter in NYC then yes you pay around a combined 10% NY State and NYC sales tax. However, if you ship it across the Hudson River to New Jersey there is no tax and B&H no longer charges for normal shipping so the $7450 is your final cost. Also keep in mind due to the weaker Euro right now, Leica USA is offering better pricing than we might see elsewhere. algrove Posted May 13, 2015 Share #11 Posted May 13, 2015 In Germany it is 7200,- Euro (VAT of 19% included) Another way of looking at this for an American is: €7200 ex-19% VAT=€6050. If the Euro is €1=US$1.15 then the $ cost in Germany is $6958 versus our US price of $7450. That makes it $500 less in Europe than in the US. profus Posted May 13, 2015 Author Share #16 Posted May 13, 2015 As mentioned in other thread Leica wanted €4200 to replace MM with MM246 /Magnus that's rather insane I would say... Cannot see why anyone would do that - wouldn't it be more logical to sell MM first - still haven't seen MM that sells for less than 3000 € ?? Cannot see why anyone would do that - wouldn't it be more logical to sell MM first - still haven't seen MM that sells for less than 3000 € ?? Even more funny is that when I turned down the offer my MM, which was promised a sensor replacement to have taken place back in February, was asked to be sent asap to Germany for a priority service. mmradman Posted May 14, 2015 Share #18 Posted May 14, 2015 Agree Jeff, but I did not want to complicate my answer since I felt it was an innocent question from someone living in Europe. There is nothing innocent when it comes to money and tax. Withinn EU we don't have the luxury fiddling sales tax or VAT when doing interstate purchases. Don't get me wrong, I am all for paying the tax. I think I will seriously consider German retailers in preference to UK when doing my next purchase. Cannot see why anyone would do that - wouldn't it be more logical to sell MM first - still haven't seen MM that sells for less than 3000 € ?? You wouldn't think a company would give exact the same price (or even more) for a used camera as if it were sold on the private market?

So you guys don't have to pay any import tax plus VAT when entering your homeland border with goods you bought abroad? Cool. In Europe this would be illegal although a lot of people get away with it by simply not declaring their stuff at customs.
