MM - No Image on Screen, Only Numbers...

I'm sure this topic has come up before.  I love my MM except for blown-out highlights, and the annoyance of wanting to see an image on the LCD screen, and all I get is: L1006587.  Is this a card issue?  A firmware issue? Is there a fix?  I'm currently using Transcend 8GB cards.

That is corrupted images and may have to do with a faulty SD card. It may also mean that you are usinga card that has not been formatted in the Monochrom.

It is not unknown to recover such images through a recovery program like Rescue Pro.

It had it once or twice ove the years  and solved the problem by putting the card in the dustbin.

Not really. You can run it through SD formatter (free download) and try it on unimportant shots to see if the problem reoccurs. I would never trust that particular card again.

I deleted all the images using the camera, and then formated the card using the "overwrite" option on the menu of the MM.  I took a few shots, and the problem persists.  I seem to have this issue with other cards as well.  What's the preferred card for the MM?

Thanks!

For the M9M I used to prefer Sandisk 30, 45mb/s. IMHO, older Leicas do not need anything faster, it's just a waste of money.  Never had a problem with the Sandisks at 32GB. I use a different card for M240 like the 64GB Sandsik 95mb/s and much different cards other systems.

It might not be worth buying any new cards until Leica makes a determination.

As for blown highlights, you do know you can set the high end to warn you of blown highlights instead of living with them. It's all in the manual. If you say you did not read the manual, then you will continue to get blown highlights and that is user error.

Sandisk 8GByte 4x memory cards are all I have used in the M Monochrom for a long time. I also like PNY cards, never had one go bad.

The Transcend cards have a high failure rate. I had one fail completely in the M9 on vacation, do not trust them. Amazon wa getting a lot of complaints about the same card. A local electronics store told me they stopped carrying them because of high failure rate.

I never had this issue with my Leica M8.  Yesterday I used a SanDisk ExtremeIII 1GB, and had no problems with it, until I removed it, and put it back into the camera, and sure enough, I only get a black screen with numbers on some shots.  Originally I thought it might be a firmware problem.  I guess a trip to Allendale, N.J. is in the cards. Thankfully the camera is still under warranty.

There are few things in photography that have to be observed with religious fervor. Waiting to remove the storage card from the camera until the camera is switched off and has stopped accessing the card (as signalled by the red LED light) is one of those. Are you quite sure you observed this rite each and every time you took out the card out of the camera (and out of the card reader)? Your symptoms could easily be explained by a failure to do so.

Even though you should always format your cards in camera, sometimes you have to "reset" them in your computer. Take the card that gives you the error  (unless of course it happens with all cards) and format it in your computer using "disc utility." Then format it in your camera and see how it behaves.

It does it with all cards.  I've never had this issue before with any camera I've owned.  I'm not doing anything different, and I certainly did not remove the card from the camera before the camera was switched off.  It was a few hours before I even removed the card to see the images on my computer screen.  I think Jaap is right about my beloved Monochrom needing a trip to Leica in N.J.

Bummer. Wish I could help.

Regarding formatting a card - overwriting does nothing regarding card integrity.  It cannot touch the part of the card reserved for system use, recording bad blocks, sectors. And while our least concern, overwriting wears down the card faster.
