How do I upload photos to the forum?

  • Within the box "Reply to this topic" click on the button "More Reply Options". You will now see a largish paper clip and a number of controls.
  • Click on "Choose file" (depends on your computer system language) and select one file to upload.
  • Click on "Attach This File" to start uploading the file.
  • Click on the place within your text where you want the photo to appear.
  • Click on "Add to post" on the line showing the image you just uploaded. If you don't do that, the uploaded photos will be shown as "attachments" after the text of your post.
  • Add some spacing or some captions above or below each photo.

Repeat at will or while your limit lasts.

What's the size limit for uploading photos?

The maximum image size is 1280 pixels for the longer side and a file not exceeding 500 kB per Post.

That can be one photo with 500 kB or a little less, or ten photos with an average size of 50 kB each, or any combination.

The limit is 1000 kB for sponsoring members. You can see the limit while attaching the files.

Observing the proper file size for uploading is easy: the forum will tell you when a file is too large and will not upload it.

Observing the height or width of the photograph in pixels is a bit more involved. Should you happen to upload a photograph with too many pixels on a side, the forum will accept your upload, rescale the picture until it fits into the given limits and will silently compress it so much that you will clearly see that the image quality is not what you wanted.

Hence, it's best to carefully adjust both the size of the file and the number of pixels on each side before uploading your photograph.

If you need advice on how to resize your photographs for uploading, this thread might be useful to you.

The size limit is, of course, documented in the forum rules.

Why does the forum say I have too many private messages?

While migrating the contents of your message boxes the forum has re-established messages which you have deleted but some other recipient has not. You have therefore a rather large number of messages blocking your message box. After deleting a sufficient number of messages you will be able again to send and receive private messages.

Where have the posts of the last days in the old forum gone?

All content of the forum was copied in the small hours of Friday the tenth. We gave ample notice that anything posted after that time was not going to reappear in the new forum. Sorry for that.

Why are there so many funny entries posted on the April 10th, 2015?

The migration was planned not to include any attachments for threads which have not been posted to within the last two years. Members added last minute posts to threads that hold photographs they thought worth keeping.

How can I select new posts in my own language only?

Click on "View New Content" in the top right hand corner of the screen.

In the option box which appears on the left hand side of the page, click on "Filter by forum".

A Menu appears which shows all subforums. Unfortunately, you can not select just the heading "International User Forum" or "Deutsches Leica Forum". Simply select all subforums which might contain posts of interest to you. The forum remembers your selection even if you select other options within the "other" group and return later to the "Filter by forum".

Can we please have a grey background for our images instead of the white one?

Please let us first finish all the things that are absolutely necessary for the proper workings of the forum, let's say a week or two. In the meantime we suggest you experiment with the following tags:

[schwarz] your image [/schwarz]

[grau] your image [/grau]

[weiss] your image [/weiss]

where "schwarz", "grau" and "weiss" stand for black, grey and white, respectively. Please use the tags as given here with the German names.

here's an example. It has been entered like this:

[schwarz][weiss][grau][attachment=xxxxxxxx][/grau][/weiss][/schwarz]

Why does the forum shrink my photos and adds ugly artifacts? (new)

The forum limits the photographs that can be uploaded to 500 kB each (1000 kB for sponsoring members). At the same time, none of the sides must exceed 1280 pixels. If you upload a photograph which is higher or wider than 1280 pixels, the forum will reduce its size to a permissible size and compress it very much at the same time, thus rendering the photograph quite a bit different from what you submitted.

How to avoid the problem: Reduce your photographs to permissible dimensions before uploading; in this case, the forum will leave your photograph just as it is.

Please be aware that not many members may be able to view photographs which are 1280 pixels tall. They must either watch your photo in slices or they must shrink it for viewing, both of which may be detrimental to the quality of your beautiful photographs.

How can I delete my post?

The software which runs this forum does not allow members to delete their posts. To remove an unwanted post:

  • either edit the post and replace its entire content with a full stop or a brief comment
  • or click on the Report button just below the unwanted post and ask the moderators to remove it for you.

A moderator will remove the post as soon as time allows. Please be aware that the forum is not staffed around the clock.

Who have I replied to in a Personal Message (PM)?

When replying to a PM with multiple receivers there doesn't appear to be any way of knowing who your reply is going to (if not all receivers) and no way to choose who to send it to or to omit receivers.  Have I missed something somewhere? (Question supplied by farnz)

This forum does not actually support PMs as we know from the last one. In place of private messages (which worked quite like a mail system) it now does "conversations". A conversation behaves much like a thread but has up to five explicitly named participants. Each participant can add further members to join in the conversation, up to a grand total of five members. All members who have been added to the conversation can see all of the conversation at any time.

Participants can be "blocked"; blocked participants are still listed as participants and can be "unblocked" again. However, while they are blocked, they can not see the conversation at all; once they are unblocked again, they see all of the conversation again, even those parts which have been written while they have been blocked.

To learn more about this system, look for the "Personal Messenger" in the forum's help file.

Where are the pictures gone in older threads?

In April 215 the forum has been moved to a new platform. In order to accomplish the movement within a reasonable time span, the pictures have been removed from older threads which had not been written to for at least two years.
