djdstone Posted March 3, 2015 Share #23 Â Posted March 3, 2015 Looks like a great little lens. I am seriously considering this as a partner to my 50mm Summilux. Just need a simple wide angle (not too wide) lens for some landscapes that I plan to take later this year.

Joshua Lowe Posted March 4, 2015 Share #25 Â Posted March 4, 2015 matlep - the first set of pics is the 2.4 and the second set is the 1.4 FLE?
matlep Posted March 4, 2015 Share #26  Posted March 4, 2015 It is a really nice lens. In my opinion a step up from the 2.5 Summarit in some regards.  Build quality - It is a bit better compared to the old one.  Weight - It is really light. Both compared to the Summilux and the Summicron 35  Value - In the package you now get the standard Leica leather pouch, instead of the lousy bag supplied with the 2.5, and also you get a really cool looking hood. That was optional to the 2.5  Convenience - 46mm filter thread is really good if you have the Summilux 50. You can use all the same filters as on other 46mm lenses. All in all a very good upgrade. And in my humble opinion, a much better looking lens than the 2.5 model  But still. I was considering this lens as a replacement for my Summilux 35 which is a bit bulky, but when i have used them side by side, the Summilux wins by a fraction. Not on all points, but still I have a hard time to let the Summilux go.  So Im thinking about letting the Summarit go instead. If anyone is interested let me know
matlep Posted March 4, 2015 Share #27 Â Posted March 4, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) matlep - the first set of pics is the 2.4 and the second set is the 1.4 FLE? Â Yes that is correct. But shot at the same apertures, 2.4 and 8 to give a fair comparison.
Joshua Lowe Posted March 4, 2015 Share #28 Â Posted March 4, 2015 Yes that is correct. But shot at the same apertures, 2.4 and 8 to give a fair comparison. Â Thanks. The Summarit looks really impressive.
matlep Posted March 4, 2015 Share #29  Posted March 4, 2015 Thanks. The Summarit looks really impressive.  It is. And to be honest it is in my opinion better than the (much overrated) Summicron 35 ASPH*.  Both colour wise, in sharpness and in distortion. But not in maximum aperture of course  * Based on my own personal taste and expericenes with the two lenses.

matlep Posted March 5, 2015 Share #31 Â Posted March 5, 2015 Do you have a comparison with the 35 Cron ASPH? Â No. I don't have the summicron anymore. Sold it a couple of months ago. So I can't do a comparison.
Joshua Lowe Posted March 5, 2015 Share #32 Â Posted March 5, 2015 Digilloyd has a 6-way comparison between the Zeiss 1.4, 2.0, 2.8, Nokton 1.2 II, Leica 1.4 and 2.0. The Summicron didn't do that well. I wish the new Summarit had made it into the test, too. The (few) samples I've seen of it have all been very nice. But that Zeiss 2.8 is really tempting at 1/3 the price for a lightweight 35 to go along with my 1 ton Nokton. Â Another appealing thing about the new Summarit 35 is that it uses 46mm filters. That means I could share a single filter set between the Summarit, my Biogon 25/2.8, and my Summilux 50/1.4 ASPH
matlep Posted March 5, 2015 Share #33 Â Posted March 5, 2015 But that Zeiss 2.8 is really tempting at 1/3 the price for a lightweight 35 to go along with my 1 ton Nokton. Â The Zeiss 35 2.8 is a really nice lens. But the build quality is inferior to the Leica lens. But if the build quality is 3 times better on the Leica? That is up to each one to decide. Turnagain Posted March 7, 2015 Share #36 Â Posted March 7, 2015 matlep, Â Thank you for offering to answer some question of mine, I really appreciate that. Â What are your feelings on the contrast of the Summarit? I have been going back and forth between the Summarit 35 and a used Summicron 35 ASPH. I have read that the Summicron ASPH has excellent contrast. However, I also travel quite a bit so weight and size are a factor for me. Â Have there been occasions where you have missed having that extra half stop? Â Last, I mostly shoot Tri-X and Portra 400 on my M6. If by chance you have shot it using film I'd be eager to hear about how it performed. Â Thanks for your time. Â Cheers
matlep Posted March 7, 2015 Share #37  Posted March 7, 2015 matlep, Thank you for offering to answer some question of mine, I really appreciate that.  What are your feelings on the contrast of the Summarit? I have been going back and forth between the Summarit 35 and a used Summicron 35 ASPH. I have read that the Summicron ASPH has excellent contrast. However, I also travel quite a bit so weight and size are a factor for me.  Have there been occasions where you have missed having that extra half stop?  Last, I mostly shoot Tri-X and Portra 400 on my M6. If by chance you have shot it using film I'd be eager to hear about how it performed.  Thanks for your time.  Cheers  Sorry, no film. Only digital at the moment.  Regarding size, the Summarit 2.4 is actually not so much smaller than the Summicron ASPH. It is about the same, 34mm for the Summarit and 34,5mm for the Summicron.  But there is quite a different in weight. I had the Summicron in chrome with makes the difference even bigger. The Summarit weighs less than 200 grams, the Summicron in chrome weighs 340 grams. (Black 255 grams)  So if you are hunting for grams the Summarit wins.  I think the Summarit has more contrast than the Summicron ASPH. It is almost like the Elmarit 28 ASPH in that regard. Which might be too much for some, but I like it.  I have yet to try the difference in flare. I have some portraits taken with the Summicron in back light, as soon as the sun comes out I will try the Summarit in the same way and see if there is a difference.  One thing that bothers me a little bit is that the Summarit close focusing distance is 0.8 meters. Wish it would be 0.7. But I guess compromises has to be done  A used Summmicron ASPH or a new Summarit 2.4 is a delicate question. Both are excellent lenses, I don't think you would be disappointed with either one of them.  Since I'm shooting digital, I rarely miss that extra stop. But on the other hand if I want even more shallow depth of field, I would use my Summilux  Let me know if you have more questions.
stephengv Posted March 8, 2015 Share #38 Â Posted March 8, 2015 Can't decide between this one and the 35mm Cron ASPH. Â is the 0.7 vs. 0.8 minimum focusing distance a deal breaker? or significant?
lct Posted March 8, 2015 Share #39 Â Posted March 8, 2015 Probably insignificant but i have no experience with the current 35/2.4. As far as the 35/2.5 is concerned, it is a very good lens indeed, even compared to the 35/2 asph (that i don't find less contrasty BTW), provided you don't need edge to edge sharpness at fast apertures which is not the 35/2.5's forte. If you do, lenses like the 35/2 asph or the less expensive ZM 35/2.8 are significantly better.
MarkP Posted March 8, 2015 Share #40 Â Posted March 8, 2015 The Zeiss 35 2.8 is a really nice lens. Â but too high contrast.
