view DNG files on iPad?

Recommended Posts

Are those still as slow as they were a year or two ago?

It would take seconds just to render a preview.

The iPad is a really crappy device for photo viewing, editing, storing and stuff, unless all you do is shoot jpeg's... I would love to use my 128GB iPad as a "backup medium" while traveling but it is sooooo sloooooooow to import files... omg.

I just shoot raw+jpeg. Files are linked in ipad so you can view/play with jpegs in any ipad compatible app without modifying raws.

From my experience though, when an SD card is inserted into the iPad (with the camera connection kit lightning sd card reader), the iPad is able to read and show previews of the SD card very very quickly if the SD card contains only JPEG's. As soon as there are mixed dng/jpeg or only dng (or any other raw format) it is UTTERLY and mindblowingly slow to generate previews. And all those previews needs to be generated before I am allowed to click the "import all" button...

I just want to verify that I'm not the only one having this problem, as it completely prevents me from being able to use my 128GB iPad Air as a backup device while traveling at all.

When I used an ipad, I didn't find it that slow to import dng files - not lightning quick, but acceptable in the evening while travelling. But getting them off again was too much effort, so the only value was as a one way trip for a bit of PP and maybe uploading one or two to FB. And I found PP by finger too clumsy. I've now switched to a Surface Pro 3 for travel which is as easy as using a PC:)

I don't remember if there's a slow down. I moved on from the limitations of an ipad some time ago. My kids still use them. I do remember the whole process of dealing with images was a kludge, jpeg or otherwise. Handy to have if you already have an iPad but you wouldn't buy one for photos function. The Nik Software (now Google) app was a bit of fun though.

I too have moved to a Surface 3 Pro. An incredible machine. But the point of this thread is looking at raw files on an iPad. Yes it'll be slow. From my personal experience raw+jpeg is the *least* painful way to deal with raw files on an iPad.

Just import jpg and leave raw on the cards to later process on a computer.

As long as there are raw files on the card, it still takes the "Photos" app forever to display previews - also of the jpeg's. So even importing only the jpeg's takes forever, cause it seems like the "Photos" app is trying to generate previews of the raw/dng files as long as there are some on the card, and that's what's taking so long.

Anyway, I'm probably moving to the new Surface Pro with Windows 10 myself when it hits the market. I'm so tired of how Apple products and software has turned out lately, I'm really looking forward to dumping the iPad an my iPhone.

Anyone uses photosmith on iPad ?

Cdh

I`m still using Photosmith on my iPAD Air. It`s working fine. Photosmith is my workflow to import DNG why I`m travelling.

They had trouble in compatibility in former times, some years ago. Maybe thats the reason why indergaard had problems with crashes. Those times are gone.

I also looked into Photosmith as the concept was good: as of Oct. 2015 the developers have ceased work on this app - essentially saying "bye".

My biggest issue with the iPad from the last time I attempted to use it was that you couldn't select to import only RAW or only JPEG, but always received both linked as a single jumbo file on the iPad.

For the M9 the situation was worse, the iPad wouldn't render larger preview images so you had access to only the lackluster preview generated by the camera.

My big gotcha with the iPad is that importing the files means they get picked up by iCloud photo sync, so watch out for that from both a bandwidth and a time management stand point.

I hope it is ok to revive this old thread (please let me know if it is not), but I think the context of the old posts could be relevant, and in the same time may have changed (new app, apps becoming unsupported).

I am considering an iPad as a backup solution to use while travelling with an M9. My normal workflow is to use DNGs only. The idea would be to have the iPad store the photos, if possible to do some minor sorting, and to be able to export the DNG files towards a laptop/desktop at a later point.

I have an iPad air, and may replace it with an iPad Pro soon, but I still do not have the card reader.

Is it realistic ? What are the solutions to do that ?

LR mobile is out, as I will not enter the Adobe CC program. I tried Photosmith in the past, but, if I remember correctly, I had to have the files in LR first and even then it was not reliable (working well on some days, not at all on others).

To be really complete: when I travel, I always carry a laptop, and would like to use the iPad as a backup for the laptop (in case of theft or failure).
