A month ago, I posted an image taken in this same hat shop in San Francisco. I was back there again this week. Same background, same window light, different subject.

I do a lot of street portraiture, and it has the appeal of a treasure hunt, but I'm never all that happy with the results, because it's not really a collaboration between me and the subject, and there are so many variables I can't control. I know it's a different genre from traditional, posed portraiture, with a different aesthetic, but still, the resulting photos have too many shortcomings for me.

So I asked my very photogenic neighbor to do a portrait session with me. I know her well, and she's comfortable in front of the camera. I've done a couple of sessions with her before.

I like this photo much more than my street portraits. I chose the time of day for the light I wanted, scouted the location, talked with her about what to wear, posed her, and spent a good hour and a half with her to get about a dozen portraits I like (and that she likes).

My goal is to do more portrait sessions like this, because I enjoy the collaboration with my portrait subject, and have much more control over the variables—which, IMHO, results in better images.

M10, 75mm Summicron
