Iron Flatline Posted May 12, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know this is extremely unlikely to happen (at least till reliable sensors are as cheap as batteries) but I would buy an M8 Panorama camera. Just thought I'd put that out there. It's Saturday night, I've had a lot of wine, and just came home from a dinner with a fellow gear head. The marketplace is demanding a Leica Panoramic Rangefinder about as much as I need a third nostril, but it's fun to speculate about it. Please do not take this thread seriously, but feel free to contribute far-out wish-list items. PLEASE don't ruin my day-dream by being super-serious. Thank you. Advertisement Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Hi Iron Flatline, Take a look here Leica M-X - Hasselblad Xpan. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Photoskeptic Posted May 13, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 13, 2007 ya know, this just might be do-able on a DMR. different back and all that. Oops! they quit production on that one, didn't they? Perhaps they'll offer one of those little switches that the old p&s's had that blacked out the upper and bottom half of the screen...
Iron Flatline Posted May 13, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 13, 2007 Yeah, that is kind of how my D-Lux 3 handles it. The default aspect ratio is 16:9, but if I select 4:3 or 3:2 it just blacks out edges along the far edges.
scott kirkpatrick Posted May 13, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 13, 2007 As long as you are smoking something mildly stimulating, how about scaling the D-Lux3 up to the skies -- Two stopping points -- get Kodak to double the pixel size in the present little 16:9/3:2/4:3 variable ratio sensor, or whatever ratio it takes to make the thing come out full 35mm frame in width, but 20 mm in height and put it behind a 24/2.8 Elmarit or a WATE to give a little bit of a zoom range. Optical finder and manual focus with no assist? Or scale back slightly to 1/2 that size and put it behind the Olympus 11-22 zoom, which would support autofocus. Next step would be to take a strip out of the middle of the sensor used in the PhaseOne p45 back, say the upper 22.5 MPx of it, and put it behind something from Rodenstock in a frame which supports focus by rangefinder or simply a very accurate vernier-enhanced scale. No swings, no tilts -- just the world's most fabulous box camera. As the price goes up, the features should be further reduced. A challenge to use, but what a signature it would have! scott

This is not possible (technically) on a DMR as it relies on the R8/9 for the image. The guts of the R8/9 are, of course, designed around normal 35mm film. One would have to make not only a new DMR but also a new body to go with it. Oh, and probably new lenses as well...
