I traded one of my Canon 50/0.95's to a forum member on Leicaplace. He sent it to Don Goldberg (DAG) for conversion. The thread is here:

Canon 50mm f0.95

I kept my RF coupled version in Canon RF mount, do not have the heart to convert it. Even have the fitted case for the Canon 7 with the lens, and the original cap.

Since the Seventies I have had five Canon 0.95 50mm. The first and second I used on a Canon 7s for desperate available-darkness news photography. Remember, this was pre-digital. The images were soft, low contrast, but focusing on the Canon was easy and accurate. I got results good for news photography of the time.

Then I went through three more modified for the Leica M. The first two were disasters and I gave one away because it was just that bad. Sold the second at a loss. The third, and the one I still have is spot-on, but still of low contrast. DAG had nothing to do with my experience. I did not know of the gentleman then.

Here is a recent example, a snapshot of one of my younger brothers shot with the M9.

The full-sized image resolves down to a hair (A 100%, 1:1 sample), but the contrast is unacceptable. Judging by the Noctilux examples I have seen online, I prefer the OOF of the Canon and would never consider replacing it with the Noctilux which I consider over-the-top expensive considering the results.

If you go for a converted Canon, it's all on your shoulders. It might work, it might not. There is no expert factory to rescue us. Sample variations might make a greater difference than conversion expertise. It is an open question to me.

Incidentally, mine came with the original lens hood which I sold for enough to half pay for the lens, and replaced the shade with a ventilated version which works better. I think, not sure, it came from heavystar on 'Bay.

Ken Ruth at Photography on Bald Mountain converted one for me in the late 1990s. He asked me to also send my M4 body so as to ensure perfect calibration. The lens worked fine on my M6 as well...but honestly, it occupied too much real estate in the viewfinder, and images were too soft at 0.95 for me.

Thank you for your answer, my dad kind of rescued this lens from disposal so its been free for me at this point. Paying the 400-500usd to get it fixed and overhauled at DAG seems reasonable to me. Im not that sensitive when it comes to perfect focus or contrast so I think it could work out for me. And if I dont like ut I'll probably get my money for the conversion back.

"Tough-Day at Pre-K"

This is the second picture that I took with the Canon 50/0.95 RF lens after unpacking from Ebay and putting on my Canon 7. It was spot-on. Wide-open, an old scan. My daughter had been through a lot of surgery, was on a lot of medications. Seeing the color- was fairly accurate.
