johnpierce Posted November 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone done basic comparisons yet I have not seen it on here. I've only read how X1 fans say their images are spectactular yet without the usual " because of the amazing Kodak sensor without the AA filter "-- so does the X1 show that the Kodak sensor was or was not a big factor in image quality? thanks

peterjcb Posted November 16, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 16, 2014 I've had an X1 and returned it to KEH due to it's poor autofocus. I have to say that the images from the X1 are wonderful but not any more so that the images from my M8. I also returned my X1 due to it's fixed lens but if a fixed lens is all you are looking for and you're not concerned with the slow auto-focus then the X1 is a wonderful choice and very affordable choice for a Leica camera. The actual hardware engine and its firmware has a lot to do with the final product. So, comparing one sensor to another by itself is not really meaningful. You are really comparing systems (i.e., M8 to X1 or X2). Like every camera, the X1 has its tradeoffs in the world of photography, but no camera can do everything perfect nor even well. Guest Posted November 16, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 16, 2014 i own both. the x1 is a fine cam,my first leica . the af is so slow that i shoot street allways with manual fokus. the jpg engine is great,i often shoot b/w jpgs. i´m not a friend of evf (so i never wanted an x2), but i love my sbloo the m8 raw-files a special, very clear and sharp (the jpgs a terrible:D) of course much more grain in high iso, but for me it works fine for black and white files ,if you like a grainy look x1 is a nice cam,i shoot some of my favorite pix with this cam, but the m8 is my fave,i love the range finder and imo it produces great files for black and white. lambda. csstevens Posted November 25, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 25, 2014 The X1 was the first non-DSLR camera I bought, primarily for street photography purposes and to have as something easy to take around. The quality of images was excellent, I was really impressed by them and the sensor used, but beyond that I wasn't as satisfied as I had hoped - the camera functioned slowly and focused slowly, there was also a noticeable enough shutter delay that resulted in missed moments (or rather me not capturing the moment at the point that I clicked but a half second later - it makes a difference). So after a few months I sold it off and decided to just get the smaller and more compact Fuji X10, which I kept for awhile but didn't feel the same inspiration in using. Then this past summer I decided I wanted to upgrade (again) and debated between the Fuji X100/XPro 1 and Sony A7, but decided to go with the Leica M8 because I always wanted the rangefinder experience and I've been really happy with my decision. At some point next year I would like to get an M9 - not sure if I would just sell the M8 or keep it and use both (it's fun to bring along on assignment as I'm a newspaper photojournalist). leicaphilia Posted November 25, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 25, 2014 The X1s files are very nice, the equal, in my eye, to at least the M8's. What I do like about the x1 is its ease of use, much like and old M with the shutter speed and aperture dials on top. The 35mm equiv lens is more than adequate. The only drawback is the AF and the shutter lag. Shooting it manually zone focusing is better than AF but you still deal with a pronounced shutter lag even then. But I must say that it, and the Ricoh GXR with A 12 Leica mount Are the most rewarding digital experiences, most closely akin to the manual rangefinder type of shooting, that I've found in the digital world. Even more so, ironically, than the m8, which was always freezing up or doing something funky that frankly took away a lot of the spontaneity of the experience. Were I to choose between the X1 and the M8, I'd choose the X1, certainly in light of the sensor issues and the constant dust on sensor problems with the M8 that you avoid with the X1. And the X1 's low light capabilities are much better than the M8, which really isn't much better than a film camera.
