We celebrate Veterans Day on 11th November because Woodrow Wilson signed the armistice agreement ending WWI on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. This was the "war to end all wars," and we can see how well that worked out. This agreement basically set the stage for the Spanish Civil War and WWII. The holiday was first called Armistice Day, but in 1954, a celebrated WWII vet, Dwight Eisenhower changed it to Veterans Day. It differs from late May's Memorial Day, which is to remember the fallen from all our wars, in that Veterans Day honors all vets, living or dead.

These gents were talking after a short ceremony in Grand Central Terminal. If you know your decorations you can tell which branch of the military each was in.

I'm not quite sure that is correct. My understanding is that the armistice agreement was signed at 5am on the 11th by the Germans, French, and British, and came into effect with the cease fire at 11am. Wilson was in the US at the time and was instrumental in providing the 14 points for negotiation in the preceding days, but didn't actually sign it. He announced the signing of the agreement to Congress later that day.

Wilson did however decide that Veteran's Day would be held on 11/11, starting the next year in 1919.
