Michigan locations

Recommended Posts

After our annual meeting in Dearborn we will spend a couple of weeks around Michigan. We would appreciate any ideas on photo locations and good places to stay for several days and take day trips.

Thanks

Bob

With a couple weeks you have time to go just about everywhere including the UP, but it might be getting kind of chilly up there by then.

If you want to limit to the LP (mitten), Mackinac Island is great. Just off Mackinaw city at the top of the LP, you get there by ferry, there are no cars allowed on the island, just horses, carriages and bicycles, all of which are for rent.

Not far away from that on the mainland are Charlevoix and Traverse City, two popular resort towns. Those and the Island are more summer-oriented but if you don't mind bundling up a little against the chill, the crowds are thinned out by now.

Middle of the state is Lansing (the capital), E.Lansing (home of Michigan State U/Spartans), Kalamazoo and Battle Creek (home of Kellogg's cereal).

Nearby to Detroit is Ann Arbor, a beautiful college town, home to U-Mich. It's full-on college football season now, so if you're a fan maybe you can try getting tickets to a home game there or E. Lansing.

Don't forget Detroit's proximity to Canada. Take the tunnel for the experience (unless you're claustrophobic, in which case there is also a bridge) across to Windsor. There are gambling casinos there (actually there are in Detroit also). And it's a reasonably short distance to London, Ontario, another fine little town. Actually Detroit is not that far from Toronto. Or Chicago. 4-5 hours ride either way. So if you've got a couple weeks and are not from the area, might be worth considering.

Fall is also hunting season in MI, if you're into that.

This is all just off the top of my head. I was born and raised there but back only infrequently during the last 20 years.

I leave for MI UP this Friday afternoon and will join the Dearborn group next Wednesday. Heading west, will visit Sault Ste Marie, Tahquamenon Falls State Perk, Lakeshore Natl and Pictured Rocks, Laughing Whitefish Point, Purcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, then East along Escanaba, Manistique, back across the Bridge, South down rt 31 to Charlevoix and Traverse City.

Locked up Hotels along the way cause the color will be perfect but that also means the leaf peepers will be everywhere.

In the lower peninsula I suggest the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. In the upper peninsula I suggest the Pictured Rocks area and/or the Copper Harbor area, both with equal enthusiasm. But don't undersetimate the the distance. The drive time from Dearborn to Copper Harbor is about the same as the drive time to Atlanta! Some people are attracted to the urban ruins in Detroit, which are interesting and fairly unique. But don't try that without a local guide.
